Woodworking Plans Scam...
You've heard the old saying... If it sounds too good to be true - then it probably is ? Well I recently got stung by the following scam...
Searching Google for 'woodworking plans', I spotted a Paid Advert over on the right hand side of the search results for:
20,000+ Woodworking Plans - All for less than the price of One.
www.charleysebooks.com
So... I went. I examined. I paid my US$9.95
What did I get? Not one single PLAN... Just a bunch of LINKS to other web sites offering plans.
Complained to the owner - requested refund. Nothing heard back (in 3 weeks).
So BEWARE of this site - and don't waste your money like I did !!!
Regards, Greg.

I saw this page a few weeks ago and was tempted to buy just out of curiosity....thanks for the warning!
Have you checked out the "square trade" internet security link at the bottom of their page? May be an avenue of complaint but I don't hold too much hope. The following is a clipping from the "Q&A" section of the site, which maybe is ringing little alarm bells?
Q.Are all 20,000 plans on the disk?
A. The plans are from links on the internet, I have spent over 100 hours researching for the very best plans on the internet.
Q. What is the Guaranty
A. I offer 100% money back guaranty
Cheers,
P

The picture of the "Weekend Workbench" is a joke.
They claim it can be easily built in a weekend.
I actual fact it is this workbench:
http://pages.friendlycity.net/~krucker/Bench/index.htm
Which took this guy months to build and is definitely not a weekend project. He puts all that workin and then tells people about it and it's image gets nicked for a scam. terrible.
I've emailed him to let him know.
LL
And he replied:

Thanks Adam. Unfortunately, I have had to deal with this many times before. I epically like the picture of my bench on his site that says it is made of construction grade lumber and can be made in a weekend. I can tell you that I spent a pile of money on that bench buying good hard maple. And making it in one weekend! Yeah, right. Took me about a month of working on it four to six hours a day on evenings and the weekends. Sheesh...
I will see what I can do but since he is not really selling my plans - only a link to them, I probably can't do anything about it.

Think Revenge!
Greg,
You clearly have the technology to kill this thing Why not post the entire contents of the "book" as a web page, with a suitable explanation. If enough of us were to provide bone fide links to your site, I imagine the search engines would very suddenly give the dear scamming pooey bum seppo all the publicity he/she can handle!
All internet links are in the public domain, so there can hardly be any legal issues. If there is one piece of original copy, it may have to be slightly modified, but I don't believe you can be prevented from direct quotes.
I'll send you half your purchase cost for the "right" to access it.
Cheers,
P

hi greg,
i am going to assume that you paid by visa or the like.
if this is so you can fill in a stat deck with your bank and they will challenge the charger (ie the scumbag  ) you will then be refunded your money .
make sure you say that he failed to provide what you ordered.
I had a few charges onto my visa a few years ago i dont know who the people were but was suss when i checked my statment and saw charges for around $80.00, per month for a few months. went into the bank did the above and a few weeks later got a full credit. (i also ordered a new visa card therfore a new number, end of problem)
hope this helps

plans
I followed a link from the pictures gallery to "woodmith plans" and I am attaching a picture displaying their guarantee of their project.
It states that if after purchasing a plan you are not satisfied with the project you have produced they would refund the cost of the plans. How many of us could resist this offer, I am never totally satisfied with my end product!!!
Anybody had experience or dealings with this sales offer?Last edited by jow104; 23rd June 2004 at 06:08 PM.

Far be it for me to cast aspersions, or any thing else for that matter.
But one of the current Google ads on the header to this forum is suspiciously like an improved version of a previous scam!!
Here is an ad proporting to sell a CD with 30,000 plans on it!!!
30,000!!! My maths isn't all that good, but that is something like 20kb per plan..... given that the clip attached below is pretty well reduced to nothing and still consumes 12kb, you can guess what you are getting.
The site itself has these two pieces of consumer advice:
Sale Policy:
All Sales Are Final. Sold items can be returned only for defective replacement.
Or am I just an untrusting soul???
Note: these ads are placed by Google, not by the owners of the forum!

They could be zipped files?

Zipped flies more likely!
Nah...once you have a tiny file with a good deal of compression, there is a point where it just won't compress anymore.
I tried to compress the clip and got it down to 12kb!! I'd be interested to see if anyone can get it down to say half size!
Anyways the punters have been warned!! One wonders how many ten dollar bills these guys collect!

"Sale Policy:

Even the guaranty is dodgy. Who needs a defective replacement?
It only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.
