WoodworkingatHome DVD - Split presentations???
Hi,
For those people who get the WoodWorkingatHome DVD magazine, what do you think about their split (over two issues) presentations. Especially when issues are two months apart. It tends to annoy me.
For example, in their latest issue, Dick Sing is doing a presentation on Skew chisels but it's a part 1 of 2 thing. I have to wait till next issue before I see the rest of the presentation. They have done this once or twice over the years, fortunately during the period before I was a subscriber, so when I 'got the lot' this was not an problem, I just popped in the next issue.
Should these presentations be self contained in one issue? Since, I suppose the DVD is limited in capacity, do we ask them to edit the presentations down, toss out the non-main stuff or what?
I believe the producer is an eminently approachable bloke who would act on complaints. I just want to know if my opinion is 'mainstream' or not?
Regards

Burn,
I don't really see why you should object to the splitting of articles. It is commonly done in printed magazines like Fine Woodworking, where a project is complex and would take up an unduly large portion of the magazine, if it were presented in a single article.
I was not previously aware of this DVD magazine. are you happy with the standard of the projects presented, and would you recommend subscribing?

I would wholeheartedly recommend this DVD magazine - it's about USD60 per year and you get 6-7 issues a year. There are three main presentations and a number of smaller ones. The three main are on joinery/furniture, turning and carving. The ability of 'seeing' a complete project from start to finish, I think, are a better medium than just a printed magazine. You also get a complete transcript of the joinery/furniture projects as well as plans in pdf files on the DVD.
Naturally plans are in imperial, but not that much of a hassle. Dean did a very good review on it (www.onlinetoolreviews.com).

I susbscribe as well and am still going through the back issues, so as you say not a problem thus far. I think its fair to split some presentations as otherwise I guess they probably would run into size constraints with their more complicated pieces.

The spilt articles are APITA but... if they crammed them into one issue we would have less other articles per issue, IMHO better to keep it the way it is.
The WAH dvd's are a good product, monthly issues would be nice... I've lost 2 of my issues cant find'em anywhere not happy!....................................................................

Why can't they release two DVDs if the articles are to large to fit on one. It is not as if the media is expensive.
I always think it is a ploy to get you to buy the next issue.
Growing old is much better than the alternative!

I enjoy WW@H DVDs as they provide a visual insight into some techniques, as well as the PDFs (as mentioned).
I can understand why they split some articles across multiple issues, and despite the product being a good one, it's a common tactic with publishers to help ensure continued subscriptions.
I do find the articles a little variable in interest and quality, but they have a pretty wide audience to aim for.
The ads are a pain, but it helps keep our costs down, and they're not too intrusive, so I can accept them.
Also, the WW style is very American, with the use of lots of veneered ply, dados to a fare thee well and virtually no "darkside" stuff
The subscription is cheap enough, so I'll keep it up (so to speak:eek: )
Cheers!

Woodworkingathome DVD no more - anyone have issue 3?
Recently Chris DeHut announced that the dvd magazine "Woodworking at Home" was ceasing publication.
A pity because at least it was affordable and it catered to my preference of seeing rather than reading about an activity.
I had a subscription but missed out on issue no 3. Has anyone a copy they are prepared to lend?
Hope so

Go to the woodworkingathome web page - they are offering copies of past issues of their dvd's for those with outstanding subscriptions.
My problem is that the one I want is out of stock - Issue 3.
Get some of the past issues at least!
