    Default New Workbench

Next weekend I am going to start making a new working (version 3). I want to mount a record vice on the end of the bench. But I am concerned about movement of the timber. If I put an apron across the end grain how can I secure it firmly but still allow for expansion and contraction of the top?

    Hi Chook,

I need to do add endcaps on my bench too. Are you coach screwing it on ? I am.

To allow for movement I'm planning to have one clearance hole in the endcap the correct diameter and the others slightly oversized. In my mind the coach screw into the front apron would be in a tight clearance hole then the endcap can expand/contract on the back of the bench top.

    Interested to hear more answers.

My end cap is rebated for the top and then extends back to the legs to which it is bolted.

    Hi,
My 2c worth. No end cap no expansion problem. They seem to be only for looks in any case.
I have fitted an end vise to the end grain and not had any problems.
    Regards
    John
