think of what you want or may do in the future & allow space for any power tools you may get E.G. table saw, lathe, bandsaw. compressor and etc. Also allow room for a frigde & kettle . If you are like me I can spend anything up to 6 plus out there so the fridge is handy and most of all enjoy your workshop
And if your partner is any thing like mine she leaves me alone while I'm out there.

Group the "dirty" machines together and provide plenty of extraction/filtration. Make sure you have at least one flat level assembly table as well as your workbench. A seperate finishing room would be nice but you may not have the space. Don't put in too many windows at the expense of wall space for shelves and cupboards.
Ummm... that 's about it so far.

A lot depends on what you want to make and how you want to make it.
Make sure you have plenty of natural/artificial lighting, particularly if you are middle aged or beyond, and it is a good idea to have light colored walls and roof.Cheers, Glen

"open ended"
hi there!
the best thing i ever did was to put a roller door at each end of the workshop.
as already mentioned, the natural light coming through is priceless.(not to mention the saving on electric light).
it also provides great ventilation /fresh air to boot. it gives a feeling of spaciousness also. in SA it gets stinkin' hot in summer, so i put in bat/foil insulation all over then lined it with wooden panelling and varnished. i installed a spinaway on the roof at both ends, and summer is no problems for me. lots of power points as well.
regards
