Workshop hire in Brisbane
Hi All,
i've noticed there is a thread going about workshop hire in sydney, and i was wondering if there is a co-op workshop like the the splinter workshop up here in brisbane? as i'm keen to start making furniture again, but don't have access to my own workshop.
Does anyone know of anyone that operates in a fulltime workshop and have space? or anyone thinking of setting up a co-op workshop.
cheers,
Bryn

There is Wood 'n' You, which is a commercial business with a whole bunch of workshop machines that you can pay to use. You can also get assistance to use any machines or perform tasks that you are not confident with.
PeterThe other day I described to my daughter how to find something in the garage by saying "It's right near my big saw". A few minutes later she came back to ask: "Do you mean the black one, the green one, or the blue one?".

Thanks peter,
but i'm not really after the whole pay as you use in regarding machines, its alright if your just a hobby/weekender wood worker. no offence to the part timers, but i'm looking at a full workshop, with full time fine furniture makers that try to make a living from it. as i don't have enough $$$ to buy my own workshop, and in this economic climate, its too risky to cover all workshop costs.
cheers

If tht is what you are after, it may not be a bad idea to jump on the phone. I used to work with a bloke who rented some space and use of machinery from a furniture maker. They had a bit of spare space and a fully equipped workshop. He was making one off fine pieces and just needed occasional access to the machines. They were doing mass produced pine work. (It was actually reasonable quality for what it was). It worked well for all concerned. I can't give you any leads on that particular workshop - it was in East Brisbane, and was so long ago it may not be there anymore, but you may be able to come up with a similar deal if you call around.

thanks peter, i might give that a go, i've still got some old contacts from when i did my cabinetmaking apprenceship, but i'm pretty sure most of them only make kitchens now, i don't blame them, thats were the money is. out with the planer, thicknesser, and bandsaw, in with the CNC, Beamsaw, and Nesting machine.
alexS, i know roy schack from my time at sturt, he moved from the gabba and has now got a great little workshop at his home, were he works during the week and teaches on the weekend. he's enjoying having his workshop to himself during the week.

It may not be a bad idea to call up some of the antique stores. I would try first with Collector's Corner or the place at Paddington (can't remember their name). They would probably deal with restorers, and also reproduction manufacturers. They may be able to give you contacts for people who are at least doing some work with solid timber.
