Usage is a significant determiner of what is required.
A mate of mine who lives on one of those tiny blocks has a 3.3 x 3.3 m shed/workshop in his house.
In that space he has a metal lathe and a metal mill, a small bench drill press, a grinder and a 600 x 600mm bench.
With all that stuff in there he has ~1m^2 to stand in.
He makes beautiful small steam engines

There used to be a Forum member (woodwould? or something similar), who made replica vintage 200+ years old furniture using the same methods as back in the day. His shed was what I call a lawn locker. He could only work outside the shed. If the weather was inclement, no woodworking was done.
