    Default Workshop tour May 2021

I started woodworking as a hobby-business about 10 years ago with a $200 Makita Weekender mitre saw, I had no help from family and friends (if anything at all, critics), my father is not a woodworker nor had it as a hobby, I basically started from absolute 0, I never called myself a woodworker because I lack the patience and what it takes to be an artisan.

This year marks the 10th year anniversary. I thought I clean up the workshop and do a shop tour video, last time its this clean is 3 years ago, the new spindle moulder also arrived in time for the 10th year anniversary. The spindle moulder costed $50k, never thought I would make such a purchase 10 years ago but here I am.

You will notice there are limited hand tools, this is because this space is where I operate my machines, I also have a spray booth, a timber storage and planning on building a shed for glue/clamp/hand work.

Very, very nice. Quality machinery - that's the way to do it if you have the means!

How big is that shop space mate? Doesn't look huge and yet there seems to be a good amount of space for all of the heavy-duty machines you have in there.

$50k for a spindle moulder - wow, it must be in another league in quality and precision. That one machine is nearly what I spent on all of my hand tools put together!

    Enjoy!

    Cheers,

    Dom

Hey Dom, I learnt my lesson when I first started... the bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten. I am lucky enough all the machinery I've bought are from woodworking income.

The shop is 9m x 6m. the floor area is the most expensive item after all, had to maximise where possible. the spindle moulder manual recommends a working area of 8m x 7m, with the spindle moulder in the middle of it.

I dont have the time to set up traditional spindle moulder and I hated it, therefore I chose this almost full automatic spindle moulder, top of the range SCM spindle moulder has optional sensors that detects the tooling and it will change the fence, height/angle of the spindle accordingly. some of the optional equipment are daylight robbery - the feeder support, is 3000 Euro. probably the most expensive chunk of steel in the workshop.

Thanks for the tour Albert. Very nice machinery. And well packed in to such a space! I used to work in a much smaller space than now, about your floor space, and it sure did have its good points . There was no free standing piece of furniture I couldn't make out of the space . Assembly and hand tool were off to the side in another room. More room is great, Ive now got a larger workshop. But the amount of steps it takes for something like forgetting my ruler gets me mad at times.
$50 G for a spindle moulder ! Sounds like it does good things . Does it also select the cutters ?

    Hi Albert,

    Thanks for the tour!

Could you please expand a bit and outline what sort of "goods" are produced in your workshop please?
I have already figured out that all this machinery would be a bit of an overkill for making boxes

    Cheers,

Nice, simple shop, with proper gear and a proper ducting system. I like it. But yes, that moulder is big.

You just have to be creative about what you make, how you market your stuff, and your target client, this topic was discussed thoroughly in a previous thread about how to make $ from your wood work.

believe it or not, I have never made any boxes, or dovetail joint!

Thanks D, I havnt really made REAL money from wood working, just enough to upgrade the machines so I can be more efficient.
