Workshops for hire
Hi,
Is there anywhere in Victoria where you can pay to use woodworking machinery for projects rather than buying all the gear?
I want to joint/thickness reclaimed timber or timber I have got from my property using a bandsaw mill.
Regards,
Wayne

as Ive got no idea where willow grove is apart from victoria, its a bit hard to answer
but checkout Makerspace there is one in Melb and if its anything like the one in Adel I am jealous. If too far away they may have further ideas.I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

Why don't you join a Men's Shed? They've got all the equipment and someone to show you how to use it. All for a low yearly membership fee. It should cost around $60 to join. There one in Newborough, Morwell and Traralgon. Take your pick.

I agree. A quick look shows several Men's Sheds within easy drive of Willow Grove. Perhaps yuu could visit each and then chose - consider people, machinery, open hours, distance, etc.

Another option would be to subcontract the dressing of the timber to a local joinery. Most will not allow second hand timber or very green timber near their machines.

The men's shed I used to attend recently increased their membership fees from $80 to $150, plus there's a $2 a day attendance fee, irrespective if you're there for 5 minutes or stay all day. If you join up and hope to immediately put a whole lot of stuff through a big thicknesser that doesn't happen.

Yes, Men's Sheds all the way. My local one has a ton of equipment I can use and would have if I could have a bigger workshop. Actually the workshop was big enough but half of it has been stolen for a sewing room. A happy wife makes for a happy life.

Sort of. FWIW I retired early from Uni - basically had gut full of rules, and inane policies and procedures.
Mens shed was if anything too far the other way. Anyway I have quite a useful little workshop, plus an electronics/3D printer room that all suits what I like doing These days I do lots of little jobs for family, mates and neighbours, and even allow some of them to use some of my shed gear. I guess you could say Im running my own shed?
Don't get me wrong, I think mens sheds are a great idea/service for many blokes, Pre Covid I was still visiting lots of mens shed to advise on dust extraction etc. At last count I have provided advice for 24 sheds.

I went the other way.
For quite a while, I had access to the equipment in two commercial joineries - Altendorf slider, thickness sander, big CNC, laser CNC, etc - but then I got locked out by covid. My wife has many medical issues, essentially no immune system, so we also went into quarantine. This effectively locked mates out of my shed including one, a long retired tradie, with a very cavalier approach to basic industrial safety including an absolute phobia against riving knives. Much more relaxed in the shed without worrying - "has something been changed?"
This was a surprise as I previously enjoyed their company in shed!

It took me a while to realize this but I have up to 2800 CFM of external ventilation in my shed (plus wood dust extraction on top of that if needed). There's also an 800 CFM "hospital operating theatre grade" Room air filter. This means if I can safely host a few people in my shed without worrying too much about COVID or getting the flu from them.. I've had one mate over several times to use my welder. He can safely work for hours at one end of the shed with the Welding bay fume hood extractor running nearby while I do other stuff at the other end of the shed.

A riving knife that is not correct for the blade is all of that and more. The correct knife and it can save your life.
