Default World class woodworkers and their videos

    Hi,

I've picked up the tools after a 40 year hiatus ....Life gets in the way....And I'm trying to bring myself up to speed quickly as well as establish a workshop from scratch.

Can I please ask for recommendations for must watch instructional videos on woodworking. The only area I don't think I'm interested in at the moment is wood carving. Joinery, turning, furniture making, treehouses, how to get the most out of specific tools etc. is what I'm looking for.

Thus far I've discovered David Charlesworth and Rob Cosman and their videos.

In your opinions, is this enough or are there others I'll need to source....??

    Thank you in advance.

    Duncan

Pedulla Studio, Ishitani Furniture, Dorian Bracht, Dylan Iwakuni, Frank Howarth, Mr. Chickadee, Mark Presling (mostly metal work but great videos) and Pask Makes. I'm sure there are more but some i follow haven't posted in some time now.

Are you thinking of being a hand tool, power tool or hybrid woodworker? This might help in terms of recommendations.

world class and popular are probably worlds apart in peoples ideals. but what some recommend might be more based on the entertainment level of the video not the skills involved

watch the workshop companion for stuff about actual workshop and building things, seems like some old school teacher (and he's actually written at least one book)

The Wood Knight (or similar) and Down Under Woodworks are 2 x Australian woodworkers who have project builds along with discussing tools and machines...

I would add Paul Sellers to the list. Great believer in the KISS principal, and good basic technique.

    Forget the videos.

You need to erase prior knowledge. You're older - much older to be exact. You have, naturally, become risk adverse and spend far too much time contemplating things than doing. Channel your 20 year old self. The one that was obtuse, so just get on with a project, without caring about whether they could pull it off. You can watch all the videos you want and still be no good at making anything. The only way you will succeed is getting on with it and not being afraid of making a mistake.

Now, for us old guys, I find a constant supply of beer very help full... You simply stop caring about those things that don't matter...

Yeah, I agree. Think of something you want to do and have a go at it. You'll work out then what specific tools and skills you need. If you need to work out how to do something specific, then ask Google. It will throw up a couple of useful videos, many from the people mentioned here. But if you start watching all those videos you'll never have time to make anything.

In answer, I will use power tools where I can for the bulk of the work and finish with hand tools. I won't have a jointer as I think I'll get by with hand planes, thicknesser and router table for example. Have a 20" bandsaw and a table saw and Record Lathe

What really got me re-started on woodwork was looking at my 30+ mature Chestnuts and thinking "If I just had a chain saw mill, what things could I do with the wood...??" I now have the chain saw mill but am still setting up the other infra structure I'll need to do a halfway decent job.

These forums will help a lot. Wonderful to find.

    Hi Duncan

You have done well with David Charlesworth and Rob Cosman so far. I would not look at 90% of the videos suggested - why? Because they do not offer traditional woodworking methods and, if you want the best basics, start by reading some of the classic texts on joinery and construction.

Subscribe to a magazine, such as Fine Woodworking. They also have on-line articles and videos. Both hand and power tool work. Generally of a high order. Stay away from YouTube by-and-large, until you know who the good guys are. YouTube has deteriorated into a shout fest …. Look at Me! Look at Me! Nothing you will learn from.

Are you looking for any specific input? There are many experienced furnituremakers on this forum ready to help.

    Regards from Perth
