I suppose we all realise that it had to start somewhere, but 8000 years ago and already advance woodworkers...
...don't suppose they had more than a few basic stone tools, certainly not the choice and array we have theses days. Makes you wonder just how many we have, we don't really need!Dragonfly

From the very last line in that article, you can link to the journal PLosOne. There, you can see photographs of the actual joints at the ends of the oak timbers.
Even M&T (is that what those are called?) and pinned!
That wasn't some overnight blinding inspiration.
Here's a rock. Go over there and cut down a bunch of oak trees. Split the logs, cut to length, cut the joints and dig a hole for the well. Amazing.
