The worst possible insult
I am making a display cabinet out of MDF and to make matters worse I used staples to pin a bit of 4 mm ply to the back! And I am not even ashamed.
But as I was coming inside today I started thinking about the worst insult that anybody could make about some item I have made. Here are some that I hope I never hear
1. Did you buy that from IKEA?
2. Are you going to get some help? Maybe you should do some classes.
3. Isn't it nice that your husband tries to make things. Older men should try to keep active. it is good for their brains.
But up until today the very worst thing that anybody could have asked was if I had used MDF. But today I did and I don't care.My age is still less than my number of posts

Actually, if you are after a painted finish, mdf is probably the best choice!!!
One of my students just completed a large jewellery chest and wanted a white gloss finish (his mother's choice) With good preparation and a sprayed on finish it has come up looking as good as you would expect on your car.
Regards.

A painted finish it is. I hope it turns out as good as you say.

It really does paint up well. spray is the best, gives a nice even finish. You can even use those spray cans and get good results. How about a pic? As for insulting, well in all honesty,, there wouldn't be many members of this forum who hasn't used MDF on one project or another. Here are a few more choice phrases that are not acceptable as comments for this kind of project.
"Well, I like it anyway"
"would look great in the garage"
"have you shown it to anyone else"
"Are you going to make a proper one"
Just water off a ducks back mate. Enjoy what you do Chook that's what it's all about.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

Wait until you hear,
"Can you make one for me"
or the partner tells you,
"Make one for my parents (or other relative)".

We all hear things like
I wonder how it would look if it had been done by a professional.
Not bad for an armature
Huh I could buy that for $50 down at such n such a store
Its good though when a mate comes to you and says "I have been everywhere trying to find an MDF/Melamine laundry cabinet to suit my needs" Can you make it please which I did.
or you hear your kids say "Dad could have knocked that up in a weekend and it would have been better built and lasted longer."

Re: The worst possible insult
Yeah I love the "My Dad could build that" line.
My favourite of all time and one I have heard more than once comes from my Mum. Whilst glancing at my latest of many home renovation projects she smiles and says "He's not as dumb as he looks ey". Mum is genuinely complimenting me here but i don't have the heart to tell her the phrase is meant as an insult.

If I made a set of bookshelves, and someone asked me, 'Did you get that at IKEA?', I wouldn't take it as an insult. I doubt that I could make bookshelves as good as IKEA sells for anywhere near the same cost.

I had an urgent need for a pair of big (1200 x 1800 x 400), cheap, white bookshelves when I moved into my current place. MDF was the obvious choice. However, lacking spray equipment or the time to brush that sort of area, I broke out a 300mm roller and painted all the bits before assembly. Worked a treat.

Worst insult? When someone walks into the shed and states, "what's that"?

chook:
First of all, I congratulate you, this seems to be a male-dominated sport.
Second, spray finished is the most even of anything. I did theatrical FX for several decades, airbrush was a dream = costumes, sets, body paint, etc. BUT several coats, please.
Third, if you get some rude remarks, remember this: "If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it all over you." OM OM OM

That sinking feeling when someone asks "Is this bit supposed to come off?"......

coming into the shed and the cabinet is now a trapezoidal shape.
I made a faceplate for the wood lathe , faced the front off square and next day it was warped

A few years back someone came into my shed and looked at some of my home made tools hanging up and said where did I get all the old tools from and I said I made them. He looked me straight in the face and said,
"Haven't you heard of bunnings?"
