Worst Item displayed in 2011
Each year around Christmas time in Melbourne, there is a season of a musical play "Terminativity". It is the age-old story of Joseph, Mary and the Archangel Michael and their confrontation with 'The Terminator'. (Punchline: 'He said he'd be back: he just didn't say how far back!') Anyway, the producer asked me to build a manger, and gave me a sketch and dimensions, and a request that the manger had to look 'really old and decrepit'. A friend had two old pallets, on each of which half the boards had rotted away. However, I got sufficient shabby but sound timber to construct the manger as requested, and did so yesterday morning. I delivered it to universal approval. It's a shocker, but that's what the client wanted. It was described as 'perfect'. Folks who frequent these forums are going to find it hard to agree with that judgement!

Looks great! One of the first lessons these forums teach is that every project needs to suit its purpose, which yours does magnificently - imagine instead the baby Jesus in mahogany manger complete with dovetails. In fact, it's reasonable to assume that if the story were repeated today the manger would in fact have been knocked together from some left over pallet found at the back of the yard!
Cheers, Richard

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, if that's what the man wanted, who are we to say anything but 'He's right, it's perfect.'

Doesn't look like it will fall apart before the end of the show! What finish did you use? ( bit too well made I reckon. )

Haha, that's actually pretty cool. Once the show's over, seal it up and fill it with dirt and mint and basil plants.

How do you age the saw cuts to the end grain. Wire brush perhaps and then some stain.
Don't force it, use a bigger hammer.
Timber is what you use. Wood is what you burn.

Nicely done.

excellent job ... it looks like some of my GOOD work!
I also support the suggestion of turning into a herb garden by the back door, we can't all live in mangers! well done,
fletty
