Default New Yankee Workshop - GONE!

Friday, Oct 16th, 3.29pm North American Eastern time: Wood Magazine announced on their facebook page that after 21 seasons New Yankee Workshop is no more!

This is from Bob H's blog on Wood's site:

I just got word this afternoon that The New Yankee Workshop is ending its run on PBS after 21 seasons. I confirmed this with WGBH-TV in Boston. Norm Abram, the carpenter turned furnituremaker made famous by this show, will continue to host This Old House on PBS, now in its 30th year.

"We've had a great run, built challenging projects, met wonderful woodworkers, and received loyal support from millions of viewers," Norm said in a press release.

The New Yankee Workshop will continue to air on PBS in reruns for this season, and the show's Web site will continue to be live with project plans, DVDs, and answers to fans' questions.

"Throughout the show's run, Norm has proven that he is one of the great craftsmen of our time," says creator and executive producer Russell Morash.

I was out in Boston last year to spend a few days with Norm in the shop, and I found him to be a real pleasure to be around. He's such a regular guy, not at all a prima donna caught up in his celebrity. And the shop itself is a landmark, although smaller than I expected after watching the show for many years. I'm sure we'll still see Norm at tradeshows and woodworking events in the future. So let's raise a glass of Sam Adams and salute America's most well-known woodworker, Norm Abram.

    Default Norm gone!

If this is true it's a pity, one of the reasons that I let the family talk me into getting cable tv.
The projects were always interesting and most seemed to be practical and mostly functional pieces. I wonder where they all went?
I suppose you run out of oomph aftger a while or was it a victom of the dreaded GFC?

Season 21 they only had one sponsor - Delta/Porter-Cable - and so the season was Norm reintroducing a bunch of episodes from years gone by. They simply didn't have the budget to produce new shows. The economy is such that they couldn't round up new funding for the show and so it's gone. This Old House continues though after 30+ years so we still get to see Norm as part of a crew. I'll miss NYWS though. Not much of the stuff he made interested me but whenever there was a shop related project he had me hooked. I also loved the kitchen reno series.

Never seen an episode of Norm but I know of his legendry status. Lots (the trendy ones) criticise him, but he has bought wood to the masses.

NB- Was All’s caricature based around Norm?

It is a shame they don't have a Nobel prize for woodworking.

He has taught us a lot.

The shows will run forever somewhere, I hope.

I really liked the one on boat building.

    norm is the man!

i am surprised to hear they only had 1 sponsor. you would have thought tool companies would have been queuing up to show off their tools in his workshop.

i hope the show has only been postponed. maybe they can get norm back making saw dust next year!

    regards, justin.

Justin it's gone for good mate. You've got to remember that Delta/Porter-Cable is also DeWalt and Black & Decker (and probably a couple of other companies shortly). So who else can you get in as show sponsors that won't conflict with what D/P-C produce? Bosch, Milwaukee, Makita, Jet, Grizzly, Steel City, SawStop, Ryobi, Ridgid, Hitachi, Shop Fox are all out. So who do you have left? Blade companies? Nope because D/P-C have their own blades to sell to the public. Same goes with the dust collection manufacturers. Glue companies? Maybe but how much do you think that would bring in? Not much I'd think especially at the moment. When you really think about it woodworking is a very tight little group of products and while there are lots of name sout there they are all making essentially the same things.

Norm will continue on This Old House though so that'll be okay. Virtually every wood working program that was on over here when I landed has now disappeared. The only one that's started since I came over and is still going is The Woodsmith Shop also being shown on PBS. However, it s a pale imitation of NYWS. The host and presenters on that show could make the act of watching grass grow seem like a prime time ratings winner! Oh God they're bad. They have some interesting projects but I've actually drifted off while watching and woken up in the middle of the next program.

If they did give out a Nobel Prize for woodworking they would have to give it to soembody who had only been woodworking for 10 months, talked a lot about wood woking but hadn't made it into the shed just yet.....but talked about going out there some time.

Perhaps Mr Obama is a woodworker too!

The world was honestly a better place for having NEW YANKEE WORKSHOP on-air. For years I have toyed with the idea of creating the working with wood show, where Aussies make heirloom pieces consisting of projects that could be reasonably completed over a couple of weekends. Perhaps folks here might feel the time is approaching for us to make our own world-class show dealing with the subject. Production costs would be minimal and projects abound if one wants to make (remake) period style pieces.... I'd certainly be keen to help anyway

Default Obama - just another politician

I liked your comment, Luddite. The best thing that Obama could have done would have been to decline the award, honestly stating that he did not deserve it. He missed that golden opportunity to show himself as an honest and dignified man, not seduced by the temptation of personal glory for something that he has not done.

Shows the ego and the arrogance of the man in taking this award. Still, he is a politician, so we should not be surprised.

Virtually all of them are on the newsgroups. Oh and the Yanks get the government/politicians they so richly deserve no matter who's in power. Problem is the rest of us wind up paying the price right along with them!

That is a real shame. I always enjoyed Norm's show.

Who will remind me to wear these safety glasses now....
