Some decisions from the USA courts are completely confusing. On the one hand you have the right to bear arms (admittedly with local modifications) and on the other you have the right to compensation if you injure yourself with hot coffee or, in this case, by using machinery apparently without due care.
The strangest part for me is that the company who made the saw were sued on the grounds that they could have made their product safer, not the employer for supplying his workers with an unsafe product!
I would imagine a lot of the lower end car manufacturers would start to be concerned. Many safety devices are in use in high end models only. Plenty of room for litigation there.
What happened to the idea of not using machinery in an unsafe manner? Apparently there was no fence, riving knife or blade cover fitted!
Cheers,
Jim

The real concern is that the legislators will enact a law which makes anything that is not within the parameters of the saw stop illegal to sell. Giving a virtual monopoly to one maker.
There must be other ways to build in 'ultimate' safety.
I have difficulty in holding a manufacturer ultimately responsible when there has been gross misuse of equipment. On the other hand I specifically detest manufacturers hiding behind 'buyer beware' notices.
Let's ban cars - they are inherently dangerous - thousands of lives lost yearly
Is there a saw stop on a chainsaw?

Where will it end?
Sawdust Maker mentioned chainsaws , but if it were to become fact that all table saws had to use this technology, then surely ALL circular saws would follow, then bandsaws, planers, in fact anything with moving sharp bits. Perhaps blenders, food processors, juice extractors...

The other side of the coin is that we are getting warnings on practically everything as manufacturers try to cover themselves against litigation. This site is worth it for a glimpse of the most extremely ridiculous warnings:

Perhaps the thing that bothers me most about this is as we get more idiotproof stuff people become bigger idiots.
I was in NZ last year and wandering round picton looking for breakfast suddenly noticed I was in the middle of a building site. Virtually no barriers or flags. The people onsite kinda glanced at me, decided I wasn't about to kill myself and went back to work. That's how it was when I was younger, and i very much doubt people killed themselves more often then than now.
Nowdays they can't cope with an irrelgular foot path.
I swear stupidity is on the increase...I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

What happened to the days of" you cut your fingers off because your a stupid F##er and you were not paying attention!
I followed this case and it just doesn't make sense! My late father cut off his thumb with a cross cut saw and he walked into reception and asked the receptionist politley to call an ambo, when she asked why he showed her and she hit the deck and needed stitches too! He copped it because he was not paying attention!
The world has gone mad!

They always go after the manufcaturer. If you sell something in the US you had better have excellent product liability insurance

The employer wouldn't have had any money.
In any event I bet there are a number of ways you could cut your finger off with a sawstop equiped saw - We'll wait for the better fools and twits to find a way.
Watch out for those knives, kiddies, they could cut your fingersregards
