New York City Woodworking outlets?
I was wondering if anyone has had any experience visiting New York City woodworking shops?I know Garrett Wade used to have a physical presence, however I believe they have now gone to online catalogue sales.
We look to be spending a few days in NY later on in the year so will be searching the net in the interim for locales.
Being in the States will require me to do a once over in the want/need/replacement aspect here at home!
Also has anyone ever looked at WWork outlets in Hawaii?
Thanks.Johnno

Tools for Working Wood in Brooklyn:
Tools for Working Wood: Welcome
A couple of pairs of Holdfasts (although a little heavy) would be a useful addition to any workshop. They're excellent and quick for variable heights.

What FenceFurniture said - Tools for Working Wood. As well as their holdfasts they have a really nice line of handsaws saws both completed and in kit form, plus lots of generally nice stuff such as cut nails and 'Dancing Master' calipers. I must be getting near to making up another order, pity they don't have work clothes larger than an XXL.

Thank you for the heads up on these outlets,I think the Brooklyn option looks like a fair bet here ,I would be surprised if I cannot find what I need there.
If not then we will also have time in Charlotte,NC https://www.woodcraft.com/stores/charlotte ,as well as Miami .FL, to have a look which does have numerous options.
I have been to Hawaii a few times ,however never visited the Woodcraft store ,I am determined rectify the time spent here with a visit.

Agree on Tools for Working Wood, Joel might even give you a tour of the area where they make saws. And I think he now has a passenger lift; the unreliable goods lift was a pain a couple of years ago. His shop is close to the subway as well.
cheers

I visited Joel at his store a couple of years ago. I do not recall a lift, only stairs. He has some tremendous backsaws on offer, as well as the best saw vise around. Great chisels, too. Oh Hell, just take along a larger suitcase!

forgot to mention Lee Valley in Hallifax
Halifax - Lee Valley Tools
Lee Valley in Hallifax is also a place I would like to visit as we have a day there off the cruise ship, the only Canadian port we visit?
We have been to Halifax a couple of times on cruises ,however I have to admit in not being aware of the store having a presence there.
If its a patch on the Vancouver store then I will be spending some time there.
I'm going to presume I could preorder to the date of my visit any requirements, has anyone had any experience doing this to their satisfaction?
CheersJohnno

You'll be very happy to learn that TFWW moved premises in Feb last year to a ground floor location.

You'll probably need to take a cab to the store, and if you do the staff will, if asked, ring for a cab when you are finished.
Store pick-up.
There's nothing easier or more straight forward.
On Lee Valley's web page is an option for nominating yourself as a US, International, or Canadian customer.
Select Canadian ENGLISH -- unless you want to practice your French -- and set "your local store" to Halifax. (I forget precisely where the local store option is, but it's not hard to find.)
At checkout your shopping cart can be directed to SHIP or STORE PICK-UP.
Your cart will also indicate the likely delivery date for stuff not in stock at the Halifax store.
when you get to the store, if you have plenty of time use the main entrance and spend some more cash.
If you're tight on time use the Express Pick-up entrance.
Have your customer number with you, as in my experience only a few of the staff know how to override the template which is expecting a US or Canadian post code. Using your customer number is thus simpler.
Payment.
If you can use a pre-paid Visa or Mastercard rather than a straight credit card or cash. In my experience a pre-paid Mastercard results in the best exchange rate from AUS to CAD or USD. In particular with a prepaid card you avoid the 3% (because we can) exchange fee.regards from Alberta, Canada

Just remember to factor in the potential for import duty "you can bring up to A$900 worth of general goods into Australia duty-free."

Thank you very much Ian for this info you have shared here with me as well as others perhaps travelling to Canada.
According to our itinerary we will be in Halifax on July 25th so no local holiday impact .Will be in town from 0800 until 2100 therefore plenty of time to go through the LV store.
To appease the better half,I will also have time to spend out at the Bay of Fundy back on the pink HOHO bus .Some terrific sites & sights to see as well as reacquaint ourselves with.Johnno
