Default Zigzag chair passed the test

Yesterday my zigzag chair (see http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ighlight=tamed ), survived a severe test, when three forum members weighing a total of 262 kg stood on a board resting on its seat rails. See post #44 and following in the following thread for pictures:
    http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...t=37908&page=3 .

The load caused the rear end of the seat side-rail to be depressed 12 mm compared to its unloaded position, but there was no damage to the chair's joints. I was happy, but not at all surprised, that the joinery survived the test well.

    Rocker,

I don't think it's fair to say that the chair "survived". It was completely unscathed, and showed no sign of even raising a sweat.

The frame did rack a little, (twist) due to the unsteadiness of the load, but to duplicate that in real life, you'd need a 260kg person with a 5' wide pelvis doing the twist with his feet off the ground.

I think also that the term "depressed" may give the wrong impression. The chair "deflected", and returned to it's original position immediately the load was removed.

One of the nice things about sitting in it is the slight amount of "spring" in the seat, it makes it sort of ... well... comforting or reassuring or something nice.

Anyway Congratulations Rocker, another top job and a great series of experiments in timber joints to boot.

    cheers,

    P

    Midge,

Thanks. Perhaps I should admit I was slightly concerned about the outcome of this experiment - I was certainly too preoccupied to take any photos myself, so I am relying on you for some good pictures of the event. Dai Sensei sent me some nice ones, but they had rain spots on the the lens, and I am not sure if my Photoshop skills are up to the task of removing them. And the pictures taken by the only professional photographer cut the feet off the bottom of the chair:eek: But he atoned for his sins by providing by far the most desirable door prizes so I won't out him here

    Ooops!

Sorry Rocker, to my great embarrassment my camera was employed elsewhere on somewhat less important stuff I must admit!

    Cheers,

If I hadn't seen the piccies for myself, I might not have believed it! Very impressive Mr. Rocker.

That's two seperate BBQs that have seen these tests and twice I've been disappointed. I suspect that Rocker's just trying to lull you all into a false sense of security, one day he will turn up with a "rigged" Z-frame for testing... and a video-camera in hand.

    I'm hoping, anyway.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    Midge,

Grand-parenthood probably trumps woodwork; you are excused. Neil has done a great job cleaning up his pics, so the test is well documented.

Remind me not to get "volunteered" again to be one of the testers for that one!!
