Help Identify a Japanese Chisel Maker
I bought this chisel from the markets some time ago and have not used it at all as yet.
I was wondering about its provenance.
Now it may simply be one of those department store Japanese chisels but maybe not.
Anyway if anyone can shed some light on its ancestry I would be grateful.

O-nishi brand, decent but not spectacular.
Looks like a carpenter's gouge to me, used for fitting round bits into other bits. Tends to avoid tearing because of the shearing action on the sides of the edge, and isn't really useful for carving at all, contrary to it's appearance.
Shouldn't be too bad at all.

SG
If the back of the chisel is rounded over then it is an incannel or scribing gouge
see 5/8" Scribing Gouge - Iyoroi - The Japan Woodworker Catalog
I bought some carving gouges in Japan back in the 70's & they are very similar in shape to the western style of gouge.
