Information about a kanna I bought.
I decided to pull a trigger on an apparently a very good deal kanna on the usual auction site. I paid 75$ including free delivery (worth $45~$55 to my location). So the Kanna itself was around $20. Even if it ends up less than great it will be a good one to learn setting up.
However, before it arrives and I have an opportunity to mess it up ) I decided to ask if it is a mass produced item, or one made by an actual blacksmith.
The name of the blacksmith is Koumei as read by the seller. The characters in my feeble attempts to read them could be:
1st- kou or mitsu
2nd - mei or aki
3rd - saku ("made this)
I attach few pictures.

Unfortunately, the photo doesn't have enough resolution to show the lamination quality. The same seller has another kanna made by the same blacksmith /brand and the other one has a closeup photo of the edge shown below.

The lamination line is not very even, but there are no cracks etc. At the price I decided the risk is worth it. What do you think? Mind that the closeup photo of the edge is another kanna by the same smith/brand. Not one I bought.

I can't add any further info on the make, but it is in great shape (new?) and should be very serviceable when set up and given a good edge.
Btw, it is common for the lamination to undulate due to the forge-welding process.

Yep it's a machine made one but should serve you well once set up. Enjoy!

Thanks )
Regarding it being machine made. Do you mean it as made by a blacksmith using power hammers, forging press etc, or a factory production line cranking hundreds of irons automatically?
Also, how can one tell a difference? Is it because it is a new plane and as there are only a handful of current blacksmiths making new ones traditionally?

I'm sure at some level a human is involved but certainly not to the extent of a hand made blade. It's just a function of visible appearance and price. It is not necessarily a good or bad thing but don't expect high quality build. It will still function once properly set up.
Also be aware there are some japanese based ebay pages that are not actually holding these items instead they wait for someone to purchase and buy the product from a local japanese seller market that is not available easily to us. The obvious ones have several 100 listings but all the photos are taken very inconsistently. That is because the listings are not their own and they are adding crazy price markups.
They preface this by saying something like "Because we sell the product at other site, we may not be able to prepare inventory even if you make a successful bid. In case of missing goods, we will contact you by e- mail after confirmation from our store. Please acknowledge it beforehand, as you bid it."

Makes me wonder why those vendors and marketplaces don't set up a simple sales site, even a shabby one.
Some of those markets are Wonderlands.
