    Default Japanese chisel makers marks

    Hello

I have five sets of Japanese wood chisels from a friend that passed away. was told h payed a lot of money for these chisels. I'm having a hard time identifying the makers marks cense, I don't read kanji. Does anyone have pictures of the makers marks from the master makers of Japanese chisel makers? I think one set is by Iyoroi another set is by Mastumura? I will try to post some pictures tonight.

    Thank you in advance.

Yeah post some pics as even if no one on here can identify the brands, by looking at the fit and finish, lamination lines and the ura ( back side hollow ) we would be able to see if they are high end or not. Most of the brands have varying lines ( some actually made by different shops ), for example the high end lines in knives and chisels often have hand cut Kanji rather than stamped.
The 2 brands you mentioned are well known and have been extensively sold outside Japan.

    Hi Rusty,

The picture doesn't have enough detail to tell anything other than they are definitely Japanese. The lighting is poor so the actual colour of the wood can't be determined (but that would only be a small clue anyway) and most other detail is masked by the plastic bags and edge protectors. Pics with good lighting showing the makers mark/labels, lamination line, any forging detail in the steel and the overall shape/finish would be most helpful.

    Cheers,
    Steve
