Default japanese wetstone: what is the equivalent grit?

    Hi all,

I have a friend who brought me back a wetstone from japan.
    the stone has 2 sides:
    - blue
    - orange

It is mentionned 300 and 1000 so I am assuming that's the grit
but how do you compare these grits with for instance belt sander ?
Is there a 1:1 ratio or a 300 japanese grit is much higher or lower than a 300 grit belt or sanding paper ?

    Thanks

    There's an equivalent chart here,
    http://users.ameritech.net/knives/grits.htm
But I don't know how accurate it is.

The 300 grit is intended for serious metal removal - it is much the same as using a 80 grit sandpaper. The 1000 is a moderate grind, about 500 grit sandpaper.

    Regards from Perth
