I use a cheat - I grind my blade corners (Ears) a hair narrower than the chip breaker. Then as I tap the chip breaker down I look into the mouth looking at the corner of the blade and I watch the chips breaker approach in the corners this allows me to sneak right up the front of the blade.

I do the same as thumbsucker but you can see it easier from the underside for me personally. As the slightly narrower chipbreaker approaches the edge from the underside it is visible as you advance it.

Think my chip breaker gets to about 3 or 4mm away with finger pressure then tapped with a hammer the rest of the way but not hammered hard, gently. Instead of '0.3mm', have a test piece of timber, advance the chip breaker to where you think is close, take a test shaving, if needed advance more. There is a sweet spot where the shaving comes out with such grace, normally it will not curl up but keep flat and even when in the right spot. Too far forward it may result in 'powdery' shavings where it is too close to the edge and is sort of scraping from what i have found at least

Not my picture but shows what I'm referring to looking at the kanna from the underside.
