I just found another store that is based of the Japan-Tools store.
They have a Rakuten and Amazon English store, but the Rakuten store is only selling some very pricey chisels and water stones.

The Amazon store seems to have a bit more variety.

Sure, 330mate and/or 330mate_com; but in checking this out, he only seems to have a couple of items there. Maybe his web site is a better choice.

Limiting payment options seems common business practice in Japan and not shipping outside Japan is another. Those sites the are still interesting for purpose of comparison. Especially Shinwa as you can see there range is huge.

I have read that Japanese sellers are suspicious of foreign sales. Fearing that we foreign devils would swindle them through some sort of scam. I think it has to do more with a dose of arrogance that they do not need money of foreign scum. Many US companies are the same. So its not only the Japanese.

Yeah, it is a common business practice it seems. Shopping online in Japan often is done by bank transfer which is really quite strange and backwards. Some shops that do accept credit cards actually can't process foreign issued credit cards. So it is really difficult to import tools from Japan.

I really do hope we can find a Japanese shop that sells the lower/mid range tools instead of just the high end tools. Currently it looks like the list of tool sites we have gathered are mainly for the more expensive tools, which is nice, but I'd prefer the cheaper tools that still work fine and do the job.

I can get around it by using Japanese friends to purchase the items for me and paying them back, but at the same time I don't want to trouble my friends all the time. If I find anymore shops, I'll be sure to add it to the list.

    Tim.

If you are after entry mid level tools then none would be easier then what Stuart stocks at Tools from Japan. He carries a large range:

His prices are good and if you ask he can get you things not listed on his site. Stuart has supplied me and many with most of our Japanese tools and is well regarded and trusted.

Then there is always ebay.com you can get very nice new & old tools at real bargain prices. These are a few searches I run daily.

Stuart is a great resource - he tries his best to explain thing to you. He is able to supply you stuff mostly from Miki city blacksmiths, but he is able to get Tasai if you ask and are willing to wait the 2 odd years.

    +1

I don't know of anyone who knows more about Japanese synthetic waterstones than Stuart.

I have complete confidence in the advice I get from him.

If I need it and he has it I don't bother shopping it out elsewhere as his prices are reliably competitive.
