Default Multiple dai for single blade?

    Hello all,
Now that I've finally gotten to use my tools more (and I'm almost done with my horses!) I'm finally getting used to their functions and strengths/weaknesses. I'm now wondering about planes and the best route for me as I start collecting and using more. Is it common to use a single blade in multiple dai for different purposes? As in having a dai for jointing and for smoothing that use the same blade? Or is that not advisable? I'm thinking that I want to pick up a jointer plane next but I'm not sure how necessary it actually is since it won't see a ton of use. Ahh, the fun in planning your next move... Thanks for any advice!

I don't think it's at all unusual to have multiple dai with different bed angles for the same blade, so why not dai with different functions?

I suppose the biggest issue would be inconvenience, which may or may not bother you.

Thanks! The internet is hilarious. I pretty much answered my own questions through more research and work. It's just that there is now this place where I can ask anything I want and expect a pretty quick answer but it almost always turns out that I could have figured it out on my own!

In the end I can't imagine a scenario where I'll really need a separate jointer plane since I can do almost everything I need with nice a regular plane. If I do, I'll just make a dai myself and put one of my Ebay blades in.

Well done, ironsheik. It's rare that someone doesn't pop in with an answer.

    Maybe you stumped them!

    Stu.
Stu, my main concern in making multiple dai for different bedding angles was that the "empty" dai would/could warp more easily; so I made a desert ironwood "blade" for each extra dai that is inserted when the blade is removed.

Do your extra dai have such a placeholder? Or is my concern somewhat silly and I can stop doing this.

    Thanks,
    Pam

Ah, yes. I had that exact same concern and completely forgot to ask! Ha. I'm in the middle of moving so I have a lot of things on my mind...

Anyway, I imagine that the placeholder cannot be overkill. I would do the same methinks.
