Question about Fujihiro chisel shape
I am a longtime woodworker (Jeff's Wood Designs) and someone who enjoys trying out new tools. Some of you may have read my monthly tool reviews for Highland Woodworking's online newsletter. I've always wanted to try working with Japanese chisels so after hearing a recent talk at a local club I decided to jump in and give them a try. I purchased a 6, 12 and 36mm Fujihiro set of chisels. They just came and I was very surprised when looking at the shape of the chisel. The shape of the bevels running the length of the chisel (along the upper surface) are definitely asymmetrical. I know these are handmade, but by a master craftsman, and these are not even close. All three are similar. I've enclosed a picture showing what I mean. Is this typical of Japanese chisels? The Fujihiro is a $70 chisel so they are not Tasai at $200 but they are not cheap either. Is this what I should expect? I don't think I would have bought this if I had picked it up in the store. Should I expect better in this price range?
Thanks
Jeff

Jeff, send them back. Chutaro Imai is a blacksmith with considerable experience, and would not sell such poor work knowingly. Even among $70 chisels, these would be unacceptable.

I agree about returning them
Thanks Derek,
I’ve been thinking about it and I agree I should send them back. I have a small tool making business where I make high quality metal head woodworking mallets and birdcage awls. You can see them at Shenandoah Tool Works. (shenandoahtoolworks dot com). I figured if I wouldn’t send a perfect tool out, why should I accept some.

I'm in complete agreement with Derek, I've used some of those chisels for years and like them very much. -Howard
