Default Recommendations for a high quality chisel.

Hi guys. I know this is always going to be subjective but I thought I’d ask anyway. I’ve been reading heaps on this topic and I’m finding it hard to make a decision. I was about to buy some veritas bench chisels in pmv-11 but have decided to give a Japanese chisel a go instead. I am after something about 25mm wide with thin edges for doing butterflies, pairing, and a little mortise clean up, might use them for dovetails too. Pretty much a jack of all trades just so see if I enjoy using it and decide to get some more specific chisels for each task. My budget is about $200 with delivery. I’m not after anything fancy, just highly functional and have a steel that stays sharp forever and is relatively easy to sharpen. I use Aussie woods mainly like blackbutt, Reg gum, tassie oak, spotted gum etc. so a mix of density too.

Hopefully this is enough information. If anyone can throw some suggestions and why that would be awesome. Currently I’m using a set of Stanley fat max butt chisels. So anything would be an upgrade. Haha. Thanks heaps for your suggestions. Cheers.

A good middle-of-the-road Japanese bench chisel is Koyamaichi. I suspect the only seller is Lee Valley since Stu Tierney shut up shop. They cost about the same as a PM-V11.

They are also one of the few Japanese bench chisels to have minimal lands.

Very good Japanese chisel often start at $200 each.

The issue with Japanese chisels is that they specialise in the work they do, and are not intended to cross over: bench for chopping, slicks for pairing.

I have both types, as well as PM- V11, so it is no big issue to swap around. However, if you want one chisel to do it all, I’d get the Veritas.

Thanks for the reply Derek. I was hoping 200 would get me close to top of the range but with a few less bells and whistles. How much would a top of the range chisel cost? And I understand what you mean with dedicated chisels for certain tasks. I have been looking at slicks too. They look awesome. But I just don’t think I have the bank to buy that many chisels of a high quality. Hence the want for a multi purpose chisel. I’m definitely intrigued by Japanese chisels though so I’m still leaning towards them. Thanks mate.

Thanks Chris. I have seen JTA at last year’s wood working show. Unfortunately at the time I wasn’t sure what I wanted or was looking for to be honest. Haha.

Send an email to Stan Covington: [email protected]
Stan is extremely knowledgeable about Japanese tools - probably the most knowledgeable person I know. An American living in Japan. He has contacts to many of the makers, and will be able to get something really good (without the big name).
