repost to this thread: Where to go in Japan.
I wasnt sure to post this and had it under tip section but this maybe more apt.
I am going to have a few days holiday in Japan based in Osaka. Can anyone recommend any places to visit such as small towns that still specialise in hand crafted things?
Any suggestion on where to go window shopping for tools?
Heading over in early June.
thanks
Alex

The rail system in Japan is just fantastic. Before you go, you can buy a tourists pass on the Shinkansen (bullet trains). These trains put the whole country at your disposal (at 275km/hr) and nowhere is very far away. Any of the temples is a great place to visit to see wooden structures hundreds of years old.
There's a zillion of them, but the big ones are most impressive. One that I visited had just replaced a beam; it had disappointingly only lasted 600 years! It took the carpenters some time, a year or so, to figure out how to do the joints before replacing the beam. They said they created a pocket in the beam to hold a plan of the joint so that future generations would be able to replace it more easily.
I wasn't looking for tools when I was there so I can't assist in that regard. However, I've found that a vast number of Japanese speak English and will assist you any way they can.
