    Default Stores in Japan

Its been a long time coming but we are finally heading to Japan.

Although I don't really have anything in mind to buy(YET), I'm keen to try hit a store or 2.

I have a list of a few around Tokyo and Kyoto, just wondering if any recommendations that I should try hit.

    cheers

Hi Shanesmith80, I just came back from Japan. I don't know if your list has 'hands' shibuya or any of them on it ? It used to be called tokyo hands .I was told that they all stock different things. The shibuya one had quite a few different types of hand planes ,saws and marking knives all set up in a display and loads of other tools around the place.Im sure you have on your list to go is Inoue Hamono carpentry tool shop?
I loved the place .the owner and his wife and son were fantastic people to deal with .get ready to spend some money I dumped a lot of money
    Cheers Paul

    Hi Shane

We were last in Japan just before lockdown.

We found the best tool shops were those tiny little one's selling both new and used "users" that are located in unexpected places in arcades, markets and traditional shopping strips. Japanese really appreciate quality, and good stuff is priced accordingly.

One must see in Kyoto is the Fureaikan - the Museum of Traditional crafts. It features a number of stalls with craftsmen demonstrating their crafts - it keeps changing.

We prefer to stay in traditional Japanese hotels called "ryokan" - not cheap, but an exquisite experience. In Kyoto, if you have not booked yet, try to stay in Gion. Then just walk around!
