Tool Swap
NeilS & I have been involved in a Japanese tool swapping arrangement. The basic idea is that many people would like to get involved with Japanese tools, however we are present with a myriad of choices and without out laying a huge amount of money we are unable to make an informed decision making a direct comparison difficult. The objective is for those participating to gain first hand experience with a tool allowing them to make an informed comparative decision.
What we are proposing is a Wife shaping arrangement for J-tool aficionados.
What we are proposing:
- Two people agree to swap a tool.
- Each person sends the tool the other.
- After an agreed period of time they swap tools back or they pass the tool to a 3rd individual.
The terms are as follows:
- The prerequisite is that you must have some tool to swap, (it need not be flashy tool or a expensive tool).
- The tool must be returned in the same undamaged condition you received the tool in.
- If you damage a tool you just bought it.
- The tool must be returned or forwarded to the next individual within 3 months.
- You must incur the postage cost.
- You must reside in Australia.
- To keep everything transparent all swaps must be posted in this thread, stating what, where and how - is being swapped and with whom.
I have a Ouchi Yama-ari oire-nomi and a Kikuhiromaru Shinogi-tsuki-nomi and two Australian Natural stones that I am wiling to swap.
NeilS is willing to contribute some J-tools and stones.
If your interested post back in this thread. Specifying what you are willing to swap.

On offer is a loan of my diamond feather file for touching up your blunt J-saws.

It will come without a handle to reduce the cost and effort of posting back or on to another forum member. Should only be a couple of $s to post as a large (125gm x 25mm thick) letter. Just tape to a piece of card so it doesn't file its way out in transit... )
I'm not needing a swap on this one.
And remember to...

Hi Neil,
I have a diamond feather file but not one like that. Does it have any special features and where did you buy it?

Hi Gadge
It is a medium grit iWood made by Koyama. Nothing special, but has the required feather edge profile for J-saws.
I have had it for quite some time now so can't remember where I got it from, probably from Tools from Japan.
How have you gone with sharpening your crosscuts?
Stay sharp!

Hi Neil,
I bought a few old saws with teeth missing here and there to practice on, then made a japanese style saw vise.
After a bit of practice I was able to set the teeth and get the saws sharp and cutting straight. I started on the larger saws to begin with to make it easier. Haven't tried to sharpen anything too fine yet.
Unfortunately there is not a log of information on metate out there but I read everything I could find.
