Default Change 18mm ply project to 16mm melamine with one command?

    Hi all,

I've got a shelving project in Sketchup that is based on 18mm ply.

We've decided to go with 16mm Melamine.

Anyone know how to change all 18mm ply to 16mm Melamine using a single command?

    tia
    Thanks,

Don't think it's possible unless you buy the professional version.

The difficulty with changing dimensions is one of the tings I hate about Sketch-up.

How would I do it with the professional version?

I guess we could always see how much the more the 18mm would cost.

    LOL

I think the professional version allows you to specify the sizes of components. So You can go in and change all the sheet thicknesses to 16mm.

However, are far as I know you can't easily change other dimensions to compensate for the thinner sheets.

The easiest method I know is to
    1. decide on the material you will be using early on
    2. use sketch-up to draw up your plan.

what you appear to have done is use sketch-up to draw up a concept design
now you have decided to go with 16 mm material, you need to draw up the detailed design.

If the drawing was done with dynamic components with a custom attribute "thickness", then possibly you could have changed this attribute from 18mm to 16mm. But then also, the individual components won't be touching each other anymore so more attributes will have needed to be written into the drawing to glue everything back together within the drawing as dimensions change.

I probably could draw the shelving project 100 times from scratch before I managed to draw/code the project once with a bunch of dynamic components and get them to work with each other correctly.

I believe Autodesk Fusion 360 is much better in this regard, though I don't use it so it may be a royal pita as well.

Or, you could use 18mm Melamine. It is out there but not as common (inexpensive) for individual sheets as 16mm. Generally supplied wholesale in pack lots but someone like AllBoard in Bayswater may have it or be prepared to buy in a pack and break it if you want close to half a pack.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
