Help needed converting 3d Sketchup to CNC .dxf format
Want to research here before submitting to AirTasker.
I've made a number of attempts at cutting my own 5 pointed star.
To be used as a large fruit bowel or Christmas decoration.
I've never been able to build one with enough accuracy.
So this year instead of having another go,
I'm researching how to get it to the CNC stage.
First step is to get it into a CNC recognisable file in .dxf format.
I've got a SKP file for the bowel and another two skp files: one each for the left and right segments of a point.
Is there anyone I can send these to where we can convert these into something (like the proper perspective)
that the CNC operators will know how to use?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
nb: .dwg and .dxfThanks,
Barry G. Sumpter

What version of Sketch-up do you have? Sketch-up Pro can export as DWG or dwg files apparently.

Hi Lappa,
Thanks for the reply.
Yes I can save as .dwg and .dxf
I'm looking for someone in the CNC business who can tell my what I need to provide from Sketchup (as in aspect) for a CNC machine.
It's a complex project that may not be able to be done by any normal CNC machine.
Preliminary quick chat with my CNC guy who mentioned his CNC could only cut to certain angles.
Was hoping he could adjust the angles to fit his machine to give me my project.
I was super happy and very surprised with him saying he'd have a look at it.
I'm wouldn't be surprised if it's in the too hard basket for most if not all.
Keeping my fingers crossed.Thanks,

Yep. Heard from my CNC guys.
Way too hard.
Too many angles the CNC machine can't manage.
Bummer.Thanks,

OK
your star consists of 3 pieces
1 x base -- would be tricky to cut on a table saw, but relatively trivial to cut out on a band saw.
5 x right side of point
5 x left side of point
I'm thinking forget the miter gauge and make a set of jigs.
But it's after 10PM here, so more tomorrow evening.regards from Alberta, Canada

One step at a time.
I already have a plan for the bottom.

Hi Barry
I had a bit of time in the garage and had a play with your dilemma as I said earlier, I think the solution is to forget the miter gauge and the compound table saw angles that are doing your head in and make up a set of jigs.
Your star consists of 3 pieces, today I made up an example of the jig I'd use to cut the right side of each point.
Step #1.
Make up a block that contains the layback angle you have adopted for the sides. I was working with a small block so adopted about 30 degrees.
You might want to use something like 45 or even 60 degrees. The block you start with needs to be rectangular in cross section and long enough to support the sides.
Step #2
attach the block to a table saw sled much like what this guy does in this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7hckWV84pM
after you pass the sled through the saw you should have a sled with support block that looks like this (I didn't mount the block onto a sled as I just wanted to show the orientation relative to the saw blade.)
Step #3
Chamfer the sides so that the bottom will lie flat on the sled.
Step #4
Support a bowl side on the block as you pass the side and the sled trough the blade.
After cutting the mating side you will be able to glue up a joint looking like this.
I'd probably make up 12 angle blocks. Which could all be cut from one long piece of rectangular stock.
I'd use 2 of the blocks on the table saw sled, and the other 10 to make a jig for the glue-up stage.regards from Alberta, Canada

Should be able to have a look next week.
Finishing up some Christmas decos for the house.
Then checking mitre slot to saw blade alignment on the contractors table saw.
Then checking the fence alignment.Thanks,
