Help finding iMac solution for SheetLayout in Sketchup 2016
QUICK NOTE TO SELF: there is NO quick and easy cut list associated with Sketchup. Don't spend anymore time looking.
Hi all,
Spent that last 4 days trying to sort out a sheet layout in Sketchup 2016 for iMac.
Can anyone suggest an actual solution that they know works on iMac?
NOT windows please.
Not exporting to Excel.
Not exporting to csv to import elsewhere.
kinda a pain when I need to make adjustments in Sketchup and go thru all the conversion steps again and again.
I've been converting to windows apps and have had enough of the steps and transpositions and flakiness.
And the "How the hell could I get something as simple as three parts wrong!"
Would sincerely appreciate an actual solution and not a look here try that suggestion.
Would prefer something simple.
Thanks in advance.Thanks,
Barry G. Sumpter

having had a look at the notes attached to the Sketchup cut list extension https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/cutlist
CutListI think my earlier suggestion
Runs on both Mac and Windows. (Note: layout for Mac can only be produced as an svg file due to Safari browser security restrictions).
CutList takes the current Sketchup selection and produces a list of the parts, their sizes and quantity of each. The plugin also can produce a layout of the parts on your selected material size and can be useful for estimating materials for constructing your model.
The default settings are designed so you can install and get useful output with just 3 clicks!
The material list can be produced as a text file or a browser window display, which can also be printed. A material list can also be produced as a CutListPlus(CLP)* import file which has more sophisticated material layout and costing functions than built in to the plugin.
The layout can be produced in a browser window display (standard setting) or an svg file both of which can also be printed. Svg files can now be opened by most browsers.
may be the simplest.
If it's only a handful of parts, PM me the dimensions -- length (along the grain) x width (across the grain) -- plus the width of your saw kerf and I'll use CorelDraw to produce a sheet layout diagram for you.regards from Alberta, Canada

Sketchup for mac 2016 - extension - CutList v4.1 - no variation on plywood sizes (off cuts)
Sketchup for mac 2016 - extension - CutMap v.404 - no sheet quantity limit
----
using non sketchup apps risks data porting issues
exporting from sketchup to csv then into non sketchup apps is time consuming especially if changes are made.
Windows XP - Cutlist400 v1 - shows CutList Version 4.03 on main window
- imperial only (grrrr)
- easiest to arrange parts manually
- otherwise "Seach for solutions" returns nothing
Windows XP - CustList (Express and Plus) - works
Expensive and even the cheapest is too limitedThanks,

Barry, I'm not really sure what you are trying to do.
If it's use a Sketchup extension to fit parts to plywood scraps -- surely you are joking?
In most woodworking environments, scraps are scraps -- if you can use it good. Using software to maximise the number of bits you can cut from it is very programming intensive.
What is your problem with imperial dimensions ??
The Yanks are wedded to it -- so the rest of us have no choice given the size of the US market. Spare a thought for the kids in Canada who have to learn both metric and US.regards from Alberta, Canada

LOL. Imperial sucks. In comparison.
Metric is sooooo much easier.
Australian students had to learn both quite a few years back.
A friend about 65 now had to learn both.
He was quite proud.
My Aussie daughter at 21 now was metric only.
She's very happy with metric and very happy not to have had to learn imperial.
I recall driving in the US with Imperial/Metric signs evey where.
But no more.
I'll stick with metric and Sketchup
using the dimension tool with 18 bold font.
Rotated at just the correct angle
with hidden line in styles
with model axis and guide lines turned off in model settings
then a quick selection (screen/window) capture
paste into word with Layout narrow margins
resized and oriented to get the biggest print
then use the printed sheets white space to take hand notes.
Whew! A lot faster doing it than writing about it.
I still mess up the cuts every once in a while.
But no one will ever know if I keep quite about it.
Doh!Thanks,

can't you just tell sketchup to show you the orthographic view?

is an orthographic view where you look at just the front of a building in 2 dimensions? or is it 3D?
if its just for having a plan view, front, left side, right side etc etc all in 2D, then yes is can be done in sketchup.
Camera -> click "parallel projection" -> select your standard view top/bottom/left/right etc.
I have no idea what Barry is trying to do. I "think" he is trying to nest parts onto a full size sheet of MDF/plywood/whateva. I have never had any luck with sketchup generating nested parts on a sheet, or even a decent cutting list.
Sometimes when I have many parts to nest onto a sheet, i will spend a couple of minutes to draw it up. Most of the time I have less than 15 parts so I just spend 3 seconds and work it out in my head.

orthographic is the two dimensional view
conventionally you can have Front elevation, separate right and/or left elevations, Plan view, view from underneath -- plus sections where necessary.
I alo "think" Barry is trying to get Sketchup to nest parts on scrap bits of ply -- not an easy task for a programmer. (for starters, what are the "rules" for orientating the piece of scrap?
Like you I find it faster to do it by hand.regards from Alberta, Canada

Forgot to mention some apps for iphone/ipad looked promising as well.
I queried the developers and they all state "next release".
I asked if they had any plans for the release date. no pressure. no promises.
And mentioned their previous release was 5+ years ago.
Haven't heard back from any yet.
Probably for the best as development and iOS are short lived.
I've queried the developer for the $5 ORO SU extension to see if it will work in SU 2016.
I think it supposed to create Ortho Scenes visible at the same time with one click.
No reply, as yet, there either.
I've downloaded some of his other "free" scripts but none seem to work.
Shame.

I use this one on my iMac...
Simple Cutting Software X - sheet, panel, glass, wood, metal nesting optimization
fairly basic but with familiarity you can get most things out. Sometimes it works on a 2400 cut which I cannot do on the saw, only 1600, so if the rest of the layout allows I do a move in my head and work to that. If not, let's say grain direction, I'll bash off a quick cut with the circ saw and my homemade guide and then go from there. I've an A3 printer so I print hard copy for the shed. It's cool it does labels, from what you name the pieces when entering. Sometimes, depending on the number of pieces I'll print them on paper and tape to the pieces as I go...
