Default Bad static in car stereo

    Hi everyone,

I recently brought a 2nd hand Holden Barina and ever since I've had it (about 3 months) for some reason when it's on AM band it's really really static while the car is running and it's worse in some area's.... weird thing is if I turn the car off it becomes crystal clear

So just wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem - or if someone knows what it could be and possibly pass on how I can fix it.

    Thanks
    Geoff

Sounds like the RFI suppression in the plug leads has gone.

It could be plug leads, fairly cheap and easily replaced, or it could be a loose connection, possibly between the radio and the antenna or a loose connection just about anywhere else. It could even be caused by not having the antenna fully extended.

A half good auto electrician should be able to nail it in a few minutes.

Thanks for the replies... What are the plug leads?

It's the original stereo that come with the car so I'm not sure it's a loose antenna cable and the actual antenna is one of them little tiny ones that stay up 24/7 and is located on the back window.

If the noise changes tone/goes up and down in time with the engine revs, it is very probably the plug leads.

If it doesn't then you have to start working on other possible causes of RFI - which can be a tedious process, and unless you have an idea of what's what under the bonnet, a very slow process!
