    Default Do We Have Any Daewo Mechanics Here?

    Hi,

    Our 10 year old Lanos was due a service (70,000kms) just before Xmas but when we went to book it in with our regular mechanic we were shocked to find out he had gone out of business with no forwarding information. So earlier this week with the local garage reopened after the Xmas/New Year break, we decided to pop in to see if he could do the service on our car?. The answer was yes, so we booked it in for yesterday morning (Friday) and I dropped it off with the last 8 receipts from our previous mechanic. Thus the new one could see what had been done on the car in the past 4 years. He phoned us up during the day to advise us that we should replace the bearing on the back wheels and the air filter. So we gave him the go ahead to replace those faulty items. Late yesterday afternoon we went and collected it after paying our dues.

    However, late this arvo the wife started the car and there was a clunck noise so she turned the engine off as well as the air con. She started the car again and with the noise gone, we set off down the road. All seemed well until she turned the air con back on (35*c here today) and suddenly there was a squealing noise. So she pulled the car over to the side of the road and turned the engine off. I jumped out and had a quick look under the bonnet and I couldn't see anything out of place. So we returned home without the air con on.

    Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? I thought it maybe the water pump but given the squeally noise only comes on when the air con is on I thought it couldn't be that.

    Yesterday the mechanic also suggested our timing chain should be replaced given the mileage on the car (69,000 kms). Is this usually the case?

    Best bet would be to take it back to the mechanic to get it checked out. One thing to check is if the air-con compressor belt is a bit loose, which can lead to a loud squeaky sound as it slips.

    And to go off topic slightly...... Just a word, and coming from an ex-auto-electrician..... just because something "goes amiss" after its been to a mechanic, doesn't mean they busted it. The best I have seen along these lines is a person blaming me for their car running out of fuel after I replaced the starter motor

    Edit: That second paragraph isn't aimed at you, just a (sometimes funny) point of view from the other side!

    Timing chain or belt?

    Belt - definitely, just on age.

    Chain...maybe. Unless there is some specific reason, I wouldn't think it'd need doing yet, but then maybe the original chains aren't particularly good. The thing is, chains seldom break, so are less prone to do mega expensive damage. If it was a belt, then it could - and a 10 year old Lanos would basically be written off if that happened, unless you could find a nice cheap secondhand motor. See what your owners manual says.

    ring up a dealership and ask their mechanic what the reccomended service interval is for a belt ....the noise does sound like a simple belt problem, but there are numerous other "simple problems too".....take it to someone who knows what to look for ....

    Lightbulb Chains and belts

    Belt or Chain replacement interval should be in your Handbook.

    I'm a Mazda person and they are 200,000 klM for Chains.
    Belts??????? Thinking 80,000 klM BUT ?????
    MotoGuzzi is 100,000 klM, these usually do NOT require it;
    AND they are SO easy to do.

    Daewo will likely recommend one of their own.

    Squealing sure sounds like the AC Belt;
    the KLUNK could be the compressor taking up when the belt grips.
