    Default Dash Cams

    Dash cams
I've actually become quite addicted to them, not just for the carnage, but for the scenery as well - some red necks dash cam is probably as close as I'll get to America.
I've also decided that they are virtually a must have - especially for me as I'm running 3rd party insurance only.

What do you get - they range in price from $35 to well over $1k, I'll spend what I have to, but I need to spend as little as possible.

What I am looking for is decent quality images, a decent amount of storage (I'm guessing they use SD cards?) and it needs to have a solid mounting but the cam itself needs to be removable - I have a thief of a neighbour who unfortunately shares the same property manager so beating him is not an option at this point in time.
    Thanks in advance guys

Yeah, most use SD cards. Personally I reckon 720p resolution is enough, paired with a 16GB SDHC I was getting just over an hour of footage. Larger cards are dirt cheap nowadays.

If you're wanting one to cover your butt in case of an... incident, I'd suggest you look for one that has GPS tagging. Could be handy in case of litigation.

It'd also be good if it had a polarising (CPL) filter to minimise glare effects or could be retro-fitted with one. Tends to be the pricier units, though.

Whatever you buy, make sure it meets your requirements first though. There are some "bargains" out there that have all sorts of bells 'n whistles, GPS navigation, Voice Assist, Driver Assist functions, etc. In reality they're actually pretty crappy at ALL of those functions... and even worse at being a camera!
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

I've got a 70mai front cam and it is fine. Though I really think I need a rear as well. Several good kits available that record front and rear, and that would be my recommendation. I can hook a cam into my Android head unit, but haven't. I never really thought one was necessary until I met Melbourne drivers...

with Dash cams you pretty much you get what you pay for. So if you feel like its a must have pay as much as you're willing to pay. At the end of the day if you're not getting full comprehensive insurance you're already saving already.

Also if you're not planning on selling the car anytime soon, get one hardwired to the vehicle. Dash cams are one of those devices that you really want to set and forget, as lets face it no one plans to get into a car accident and the one day you forget to plug it in/charge it will be the day you probably need it.

Any particular Dash Cams people would recommend. Looking to include some of the necessary bits - dpi, recording time, clarity, GPS, speed indication and date/time and vision in low light/night times.

No particular recommendation, but most of the better ones will have a cyclic recording facility...it will record in blocks of maybe 5 minutes at a time until the card is full, then overwrite the oldest. They usually have crash sensor so know to keep certain tracks and normally there is a manual way to tell it to keep the current recording. Buy a name brand you know, Garmin or something like that, over a cheap thing you've never heard of. That said there are plenty of good ones around. If you have Costco membership, they usually have a decent one in there.
