Engine light mystery solved
I've had an intermittent engine light comming on. Had been to mechanic and replaced O2 sensor and light came back on with no error codes.
I was told and electric fault?!
Today after research and looking I found a stray earth cable that should of been hooked up to Battery and so far no engine light and car not stalling.
I hope this was the source of the issue!

Not related to your issue directly, but it seems with all the electrical gadgetry on modern cars, the state of the battery will play funny buggers with some of the systems.
The a/c stopped working on my car one day (of course it was a 40 degree day), then started working again the following day. A week later it happened again, and again started working the next day. After a third time, i was told to replace the battery...never happened again.
With others i know, weird fault codes started to appear, certain systems playing up, all rectified with a new battery.
I guess the drain on the electrical system is greater with so many mod-cons.

Sounds like a barina.
I have a friend and when the engine comes up with error codes it turns the aircon off (I have no idea why).
Next day it goes again until another error pops up.
I know its not her battery as its reasonable new.
Don't you hate it when its intermittent errors.
I'd almost be tempted to go back to an older car with no computer.

We had an intermittent engine light problem on our Subaru Diesel @ about 40k km.
Before it came on there would be a steady decrease in performance over a few minutes.
Every time it would come on we would limp home and then next day start it up to take it to the dealer and the light would be gone.
One day it came on and we drove it straight to the dealer but when they restarted it to check it out the light was off and they could not find anything wrong.
After a lot of frustration and to and fro to the dealer it turned out to be a 1cm long hairline crack in the turbo manifold.
It's been great since then.

One of mates my suggested taking the globe out of engine light! It's an old vg commodore ute
now the inlet manifold, water pump and a hose has small leaks, I feel confident to replace water pump and hoses but not 100% confident about the inlet manifold . The Joy of old 4th hand cars. Have thrown some stop leak in it till more funds are available.
The battery is newish one, but it's a sealed unit and it's got a green light on it. Still might get it checked. It must of had an issue as its got a secondhand alternator on it.
As the NRMA guy said secondhand Parts are like secondhand undies you can wear them but would you really wear them?
The last owner had been running it on E10 and since I changed fuel pump etc I have been using vortex 95.

It is so annoying with the intermittent engine light, also ECU does not log an error code for retrieval, then behaves at mechanics.
it's good to read that others have had random engine lights. I did some Google searches but felt I would be throwing money at possible issues that were similar to mine, without pin pointing my exact issue.
I also fixed the light on the auto transmission selector so I can now see what gear I'm in of a night.
hope anyone reading gets a laugh reading this. Moral of the story don't take me to buy a secondhand vehicle.

Went to shop this morning and Ute would kick over but not idle.and engine light back on, Nrma time.
had to pull the throttle body apart and clean with special attention to AIC (air intake valve).
all back together and engine light out for the moment. See what it does tomorrow?

Well New fuel pump, New fuel pressure regulator pulled throttle body apart cleaned, fuel filter, 2nd fill of vortex95 , changed battery terminals, and a brisk drive down to a mate's place and back.
Ute seems happier! For the moment.

My 1989 Rodeo had a intermittent engine light too...
Had it for quite a while.
Finally, one day in the bush whilst firewooding no start. My ute ALWAYS starts. Bit of a panic really, nobody around, middle if nowhere...
Lucklily we got a pull start and went straight home and I got serious about seeing if there was a link between the light and no start.
Found the engine temp sensor was had a dodgy connection, old wires, frayed, etc. So the ute, whenever it had no continuity thought it was cold and over fueled and flooded and no start...this 4ZE1 engined Rodeo also has two temp senders just to make life interesting...

Dont waste your money on the vortex 95. High octane fuels are only designed for high compression engines. The only thing they do is resist detination. Besides, standard unleaded gets turned over more frequently so its likely going to be a higher quality fuel.

Would a leaking fuel line on the return line cause stalling and engine light? Anyway I thought I would re check fuel pump and as I lifted the tank out the hose was loose and leaking fuel.
also had 2 leads that had scorch / blowouts so new set fitted.
Ute seems to be running better.
here is a twist. Started Ute put lights on engine idle stumbled and stalls, looking at the relay box I'm starting to think it's been hot wired into the lights some how? Just about time for an auto electrican.
