Thread: GPS Nav systems query

not much response from the troops on this one - I am in need of a gps soon & was hoping there would have been positive responses by now.
Did you end up getting one ??? If you did I would be interested in the outcome .

$99 one from The Reject Shop works fine.

Map updates are via bittorrent until the publishers realise that I don't necessarily want maps from all of Australia, nor do I want to pay the same price as the hardcopy retails for.

I have a Navman for the company car and a Garmin for my private car, I like the Garman but they both do the same thing that is get me there i find them good for country towns in the city I don't bother. One thing, I often have to refer to the street directory to check spelling of street names. If you want a laugh set the language to Italian or Spanish.

The number one thing in the long term is cost of map upgrade. Some upgrades are horrifically expensive and I would buy one with this as the major consideration. They all guide you to your destination OK but the up to date maps is the most significant differentiating factor.

Recently bought the Garmin Nuvi 1490T from JB hifi @$299.00 on special.

I had an older one for 4 years but was unable to get any more updates.

Now with lifetime updates should not be a worry.

There is not much of a change from the older one to the new one but still easy to use.
The larger screen is a bit easier to watch.

They have a part where it shows the local speed limit but have found a few areas where it is wrong so still worth keeping an eye on the signs.

Also it has taken us a couple of different ways to what we are used to, some good and some a bit weird but still got to where we wanted to go to.

Have to find a button that does not take you through the middle of towns with the big trailer hooked on.

My Navman is a few years old the Garmin is a 1390T with lifetime map up dates (still waiting for that to come through) it was the map up dates that helped me make up my mind, to buy an up date it is cheaper to buy a new navigator.

The lifetime updates are a freebie with the new garmin

Son ended up with a Garmin Nuvi 1450T with the "Bonus Lifetime Map Update".

He seems happy with it. I can't say much as I have not used it. In my opinion it seemed to be good value for the money he paid. The 1490 seems to have only a little more and a cost that did not actually reflect that small increase.

But you can get a lot of paper street directories for $300.

I pre check the route and file it to memory. That other person has little to say in the matter.
Going bush is a lot easier. I just pass across a geological map and say we are going this way.. End of the subject. That other person can not read geological maps..

I don't think you can get street directories with lifetime updates for that price.
