We have the Nuvi 770, and I've always wanted to have her say, "Fine, if you don't want to listen to me, find your own way!!"
I didn't know you could change them... then again, I still haven't been able to upload the red light camera download for Carmin yet either.

It should be easy enough to select another voice if you crawl through the settings; mine has UK, Oz and US pronunciations. (Can also get announcements in about a dozen other languages!).
Yes, you can change what an announcement code produces by way of a phrase but it takes some hacking into the files on the unit.
If you haven't connected to the Garmin site and updated anything that it says is available for your unit, then that's worth doing. Even foreign language voice files. Updates can improve the time it takes to get a fix and to recalculate a route.Cheers, Ern

Yeah, done that, and we've settled on 'Carmin', although I think they call her Karen...

Downloaded "lateast maps" for the Garmin on Saturday. Went for a drive Sunday to see how latest they were. Clem 7 tunnel not there!
Some pronunciations are chronic. For Brisbanites the pronunciation of Capalaba will make you grind your teeth.
Also here we have a Pub Lane. This is pronounced Pube Lane! They must think it's hairy ride!
Also little things _"keep left onto..." instead of "keep left on..."
I think there were a couple of roundabout exit directions that were incorrectoo. I will go back and chec these.
Didn't get lost but----Must contact garmin about all this.Last edited by artme; 11th April 2010 at 09:47 PM.

Yes, a syllable is the basic unit of pronunciation in the Garmin voices so emphases can vary.
Garmins and the rest use one of two mapsets, which can of course date rapidly, but they use varying routing algorithms. Choice tests showed there could be noticeable variation even when the same mapset was used.Cheers, Ern

Stumped
Went to Ballina yesterday to visit my mother.
We took the Garmin to test it out - again. Despite the latest updates I tis certainly not up to date. The Chinderrs by-pass, and it's been in place for years - is not part of the Garmin artillery We have noticed this with several roads. Think a trip back to Cive Anthony is in order.

Yeah, mapping GPSs are only as good as the latest check of the source mapping and even then errors get perpetuated. As with paper maps, some error rate is to be expected. Eg. for one area of dirt roads around the Omeo H'way in Vic, 3 diff maps showed 3 diff names for a given road.
Hema dig maps may be better for country use as they're GPS checked on the major routes. That said, Garmin topo Aus v. 2 draws on Hema maps as well as other sources and still has plenty of road naming gaps.Cheers, Ern

I've got a Garmin Nuvi 760 and it uses Sensis maps. I have the latest version (lifetime updates) and in February I did a trip from Sydney to the Great Ocean Road. The amount of mistakes on the maps is amazing. I've reported some of them to Sensis (in February) and have yet to receive a response. I have a quick look at OpenStreetMap and it looks promising. Anyone else had a look at them?

There are two other free maps available, oriented to bush drivers, that are worth a look. Shonky Maps and Tracks4Australia. Shonky has contours and is based I think on the GeoSciences Australia 1:250,000 maps. I've heard keen 4by outback drivers say that Shonky is more accurate than other maps.

I don't have a GPS, tend to use Google maps when we need to go somewhere and print out the relevant bits I need.
When I last looked at getting a GPS there appeared to be 2 distinct maps, one supplied by Sensis/Whereis the other by Google.
We live about 15km out of Bendigo, have been here at least 10 years and Whereis/Sensis has not discovered us yet. Google on the other hand has, so if/when I buy a GPS I would only buy one that used Google maps.
It is quite funny when people come to visit us I try to give them directions, invariably I get the "it's OK I've got a GPS". Then when they get closer I get a phone call, hmm my GPS doesn't seem to recognise your address

Sensis and Whereis are separate suppliers Fred.
I've used Google maps for route planning when I lead club rides and it's quick and easy but some of its distance calculations are out by 10% or more.
If you get your coords from Google maps Fred then you can give those to your visitors! Make sure they're running on the right map datum though; the changes can throw them 100m out or moreCheers, Ern
