When I was looking around for a van and stumbled on the Sprinter forum, I got the same advice, the 5 cylinder, T1N was the model to get.
As I said, mine is a 2003 316 CDI. No EGR or other pollution control stuff to worry about.
I was lucky in that it was an ex-police vehicle so after I'd had the codes read by MB (recommended), I dropped into the police garage and got a rundown on the service history. It's a great relief if you can get that.
I've got to replace the fuel filter soon as I didn't do it at the last service. The brakes need replacing - both pads and discs which is not a job I can do myself. Quoted around $1100 from a european brake specialist, a lot more if MB do it. I also have a glow plug or two to replace, that one I'll do.
The only real complaint I have with my van is that it's cold inside. It takes a lot to heat such a large area in a Tassie winter.Geoff

When selling the Ex rental motor home Sprinter earlier this year, the front rotors and pads required changing to get the Road Worthy Certificate.
Cost was a shade over $600.00 fitted. I know the fella doing the Roadworthy purchased them from the local Brakes Plus shop.
Unfortunately they don't have stores in Tasmania (just checked) but that is possibly another route for you to see if they will supply the parts.
Mick.
