Default Hit by lightning in last Monday’s storm

My bro carked it a few weeks back.
We were down south just finished the Tassie Trail on ebikes.
We moved our ferry booking forward and straight back to Sydney in the ute.
Washed some clothes and off on Monday in the wife’s Subaru Impreza up to Murwillumbah.

Driving through stupid heavy rain just short of Bulahdelah very loud explosion and the car quit , all warning lights etc on dash lit up.
I pulled off the highway and noticed the lady in front of me had pulled off also.
Walked up to her car and she had heard the explosion but her car was still running so I said we were ok and in NRMA off she went.

Rang and a foreign female attempted to figure out where we were using google!?
I could see the name of a creek 30 metres up the road but she wasn’t interested.
After an hour standing in the rain behind the safety wire fence the lift tow truck pulled it onboard. Wet tyres on steel deck so he didn’t need the spray canola oil.

It was locked in park, I never put it there!?
The Taree Subaru guys were just shutting the gates as we arrived but they moved another car and the service manger got it out of gear using a screwdriver.

We hired a car and drive on next day as we were organising my bro’s funeral.
Rang the service manager on Thursday and they can’t get any readings on their computer off it. They thought the gearbox might have had a Major as it’s still locked in drive.
They sent some stuff to Subaru and they say seems like a lightning strike.

A mate has a car carrying truck out of Newcastle getting a new screen in so I’ll drive us up there in the ute and we’ll load the Impreza and bring it back to Sydney.

Hope it’s a write off, I had a V8 Falcon ute with elec probs.
Died 10 times in 12 months, gave up and sold it after swapping the great tray etc onto a 6.

Sorry about your brother and also the car, sounds like the sort of thing where a write off would be the better option for the car, lots of electronics to be replaced initially, probably including the harnesses, then a lot of sensor swapping as they cycle through failures. Then you consider bearings all through the car that may or may not have been damaged with arcing.
I used to be an engineer, I'm not an engineer any more, but on the really good days I can remember when I was.
