Issue with an 85 Laser
Hey Guys,
My neighbour has an old 85 Laser GHIA fuel injected - she is doing it hard so hoping for some advice to help her out.
Last night the engine started losing power, every so often the revs would drop as if someone took their foot off the throttle, then it would pic straight back up again.
The gauges and fluids are all normal, its gotta be either electrical or fuel system - I've had her blast the engine bay with WD40 in case it's just damp electrics.
I'm hoping someone here has experienced a similiar problem and can offer some experience.
Cheers

I would be looking at the fuel filter in the petrol tank as a possibility, tanks can get full of crud over time and clog the filter. It could also be injectors need a clean/replacement. Has a fuel cleaner in the tank been tried? Buy a bottle of it and try, could help. When was the last time spark plugs were changed?

A few years ago I had a similar sounding problem on a Citroen. One of the spark plugs had worked loose. Worth checking.

I'd be inclined to change the fuel filter. Going by the symptoms given, I'm 99% sure that's the problem.
Could also be the spark plug leads, check out the bases, where it goes into the plugs, had that happen on my Corolla.
Let us know how you get on, please??

My first thought was surging like that sounds like fuel starvation which = fuel filter. "Doing it hard" tends to be synonymous with "never takes car for regular servicing", so I think that would be the first thing to check. Air filter is the next on the list. Beyond that, a good spannerman.
