Of course in this thread I've painted myself as the biggotted asrehole that I am, so let me just say, I actually do quite like the heavy throb of a crude V8, but not as much as the zinging precision of a beautifully engineered swiss watch.
Now see, there's the thing.
I have a Suzuki for towing my loaded trailer, and I can't imagine why I'd want to race anyone up a hill?
On the other hand, hypothetical though it may be, I'd almost back the CRV on a twisty circuit..... this is not a new phenomena, check out how the Minis used to go against the raw horsepower machines around Bathurst.
One of my fondest motoring memories, was in the mid 70's, whizzing past a new 351 Monaro in my 1969 Peugeot 404 (the one with the injected 504 motor), at the bottom of a small range.
It was game on for a bit, he caught me on the straight bits for a while, then I didn't see him until I was refuelling in the next town. He stopped outside the servo and wandered around my car, then nodded and said "These eye-talians sure know how to make a motor car don't they".
His car sounded better than mine though.
Cheers,
P (hmmmm, is there a hint here of the sort of irresponsibility that Wongo's P-plate thread speaks of?)

A French slug 404 against a HQ 350(not 351!)monaro... I'd like to see that
I'd like to see a CRV against a 350 monaro too... but we'll make it fair and use both cars manufactured in the same year Hmmmmmm

Yes, my car would kill the old cars in lap times too because its a well sorted package(ST170 Focus), but were talking 30Yrs+ in tech so its no real comparison.....................................................................

Well, remember the TopGear boys could't beat a pair of mountain climbers with an S4 Audi!
but were talking 30Yrs+ in tech so its no real comparison.
Interestingly enough, new roads are so much better as well, which certainly has narrowed the "safety" or handling gap, so the Pug/Monaro thing would be a very unlikely proposition these days.
30 years ago, it was no contest over narrow, potholed, reverse cambered corners that hadn't been heard of in the USA. A Froggy or Italian car just didn't even know the difference!
The whole deal was about maintaining a high average speed, rather than the Detroit "point and shoot" thing!
Cheers,
P

Must be a small trailer
One of my fondest motoring memories, was in the mid 70's, whizzing past a new 351 Monaro in my 1969 Peugeot 404 (the one with the injected 504 motor), at the bottom of a small range.
I had a 1970's Fiat 1500 4spd COLUMN change. NOTHING beat me at the traffic light drags.
When I began to have gear box problems, I had the box checked. The main shaft was TWISTED it didn't break though. The road holding and overall handling was so far ahead of any Holden/Ford at the time!
Of course the Fiat had disk brakes on the front, BIG disks. The rear drum brakes had a "finned" alloy outer casing to help keep the brakes cool, and the drums were so large they ONLY JUST fitted inside the 13" rim.
That was a great car in those days.Kind Regards
Peter

I had one of those too. My first "own" car.
Loved it, except for the electrical system from hell!!!!!!!!!Alastair

Can I include this photograph I took yesterday outside my home.
Not in the same power league as those mentioned above, but beautiful instead.
The story behind this morris is that a vehicle body was written off and a replacement ordered in the 50's but the clerk made a mistake and ticked convertible instead of saloon. The bodyshell was put into stock and never used, the present owner purchased this bodyshell and has found all mechanical parts etc. to fit.woody U.K.

Nothing wrong with Morries Jow... especially when they got a Commodore V6 drivetrain in them!
"very unlikely proposition these days." Yes, it would be pretty hard to find a 404 pug with the injected 504 pug motor... betcha you wish you still had it? Who put the 504 motor in it, or was it a factory conversion?
I actually did some research last night a 404 with an injected 504 would have .067kw/kg and a 350 HQ Monaro has .148kw/kg (72kw Vs 205kw)... although most of the early 70's muscle cars were underrated in the power :ie a HOey(phase3) was rated at 300bhp but were really 350~380bhp standard! 400bhp+ was easily achieved with simple mods.......................................................................
