    Default Lucky Boy.

As most know I drive an Isuzu based motor home.

The vehicle has never let me down in the 9 years I have had it mainly because I have it serviced pretty regularly by a very good mechanic and any thing that needs to be fixed is.

However today I went to pick it up from being serviced and drove it down the road, around the corner of the street, I heard a bit of a "crack" when I turned the corner but took no notice at the time.

The truck didn't feel right but I continued up to the highway. It soon became real evident that something was not right.

The steering wheel was 90 degrees out and it was pulling left. I looked in the rear vision mirrors and the left side is sitting on the white line at the kerb but the nose is nearly on the centre line.

Experience (EX motor mechanic) tells me that
a: A spring has broken. Unlikely as they were replaced not long ago. At least not a front one.
b: Centre bolt in either front or rear spring broken allowing the axle to shift. Have a look.
Front spring seems to be right. Rear one? Hmm polish marks on spring from the keepers looks a bit suss.

Limp back to repair man and do what my customers used to do when I repaired a puncture. I bitched that "Shee a man gets a service on his truck and the wheels move."

Fortunately he knows I am kidding and jacks it up.

Sure enough left spring is back about an inch and the "U" bolts have slipped out of place.

Undo the "U" bolts to have a look and the Centre bolt is in 3 pieces and looks like it has been for some time.

In the last 6 months the truck has been to Brisbane via Merimbula, Sydney twice and Canberra.

I am going up to Proserpine Turn out in November via Mareeba (via Hay & Barcaldine) then back to Brisbane for a demo and then on to Albury for a 2 Day workshop and then home.

A total distance of nearly 6500 KMs in 3 weeks.

How lucky is it that it didn't let go in the previous 6 months or worse, that I was in outback NSW?

Wow, you really were a lucky boy, that sort of thing can be quite disastrous if you were going a little quicker.

! At least it happened, at what you could say, was the right time at the right place. It certainly has had a good run and I hope you now have trouble free time with the "bus" during your up-coming excursions.

Must have been somewhat disconcerting and yes, you are very lucky that it happened where it did and not at high speed somewhere far away from civilisation.

Reminds me of driving on Main North Road in Adleaide with my son, following one of those stretched limos.

All of a sudden the rear axle mountings on that limo must have let go and it was a sight to behold! The stretched limo literally crabbed down the road with the rear end way out of line with the front.

Forunately the lady driver stopped straight away, as did we to see if we could be of assistance.
She indicated that it was not the first time this had happened

Anyway she called for assistance and we went on our way. Would hate to think what would have happened if that had happened at 100km/hr.

    Default Update.

I live by the same rules as what I used to tell my customers, "if one side is broken it pays to check the other side."

So I asked the repair feller to dismantle the right one as well. Not broken but the bolt could have been used for a bowl corer it was that badly bent.

So, 2 new centre bolts and the truck is like new again.

Was a young surfie in the early 70's and a just qualified tradie friend bought a new Aussie made panel van, picked it up Friday after work, installed board racks and all his gear and headed of for his weekend down the Prom. Saturday morning, 5 miles down its first dirt road the complete back axle and springs come out the back while travelling at about 35mph. Guess who got another brand new panel free on Monday after the first one arrived back at the dealers on a truck..

About 10 years ago a boss rather partial to a certain brand of German luxury car was out in the sticks near the Murray and gave his latest toy (1YO) a good thrashing along a little used country road. Back in Melb later that week he discerned that it was crabbing badly, so took it to the nearby suspension place for a quick look. The run it onto the hoist and started to lift it but stopped with the wheels a couple of inches off the ground,, on account of one rear wheel not lifting. Car was shipped back to importer under warranty and not seen for a month. Entire suspension mounting on one side had missed most of the welds on the production line and was held in mostly by seam sealer. Importers put the car and another new one side by side on hoists, stripped the rear interior, boot linings etc, and complete rear end out of both, fabricated jigs on the new car, transfered them to his car and used them to locate the entire rear end of the body, welded it in place and reworked body paint and underbody protection, then reassembled both cars, gave his back and put the other back into the showroom.

    Exclamation

Had to borrow a vehicle from a mechanic once as he was doing some work on my car.

Said vehicle was a Holden panelvan that belonged to his nephew. Nephew had left it there for some reason and told mate to make use of it if needed.

Well, I jump in and set off rom Leeton to Wagga Wagga. Steering didn't feel right but was predictable.

Got to Wagga and back but ended up with sore shoulders. When the mate took a look he couldn't see anything wrong, but the nephew was there so he was asked.

"Yair."said nephew," ïts been like that since I put new kingpins in."

They were put in left wheel to right and right wheel to left!!
