Repair to New MINI Xenon Headlight
The igniter on one of my xenon headlights failed (after a couple of years of being 'iffy').
The only part listed to fix it was the base for the tube holder. I eventually got a headlight unit with a broken lense and after careful checking cut open and removed the igniter. To cut my way in I used a broken hacksaw blade headed to about 200C.
I then worked out the smallest cut I could make in the 'good' light and fitted and soldered in the working igniter.
Tested the unit and then used Stika-Flex to bond the cut part back into place.
Now I have two working headlights and saved myself about $400 on the price of a new unit.

The price of technology. My son works for Mazda and the things he says we can no longer do will eventually stop anyone working on a car. On Mazdas for instance if the power steering pump is replaced it won't work until a dealer tells the computer system what is going on, injectors are the same and so the story goes on. They had an issue the other day and even Mazda could not figure it out and in the end it was a diode in the wiring harness. The days of the home mechanic are past us for the most part for better or worse.

Better or Worse.....
Yes, it's sad cars have become so complex - with no real return for owners most of the time. It can be good that dealers see vehicles and may spot defects - but we all have horror stories of items missed by dealers. A real two edged sword.
