Volkswagen Amarok
Wrote the troopy off and the 05 Hilux is getting a bit long in the tooth, so looking at getting a new vehicle and the Volkswagen Amarok has caught my eye, have read and heard good reviews on them and was wondering if any members here had one and what they thought of them.
Currently looking at the 4wd single cab chassis.Cheers

Well let's just say that a combination of a steep descent, a tree and low range gearing deciding that it had reached the end of it's life which meant sliding off the track into a tree which bent the bar, chassis/suspension, front guard and the hit tipping it onto its side didn't help either.

Was able to winch it back onto its wheels and drive it home afterwards thoughtCheers

We looked at the Amarok with intent, but ended up with a Ford Ranger. Much, much better and more powerful to boot.

We are happy with new single cab chassis diesel Amarok we bought a couple of months ago with a steel tipping tray added. It has more power, better roadholding, better off road traction and lower low range gearing and better fuel economy than the non turbo 3.0l hilux it replaces. Downside is the reliance on electronics that haven't caused trouble yet but every time the doors automatically lock in the paddock I wonder how long before that wears out! It has about 120mm wider track than our old hilux which is good but that key distance from back of cab to the rear axle is about 100mm less. Cab is bigger - enough room for car fridge behind seat! Doors are bigger and it's a lot easier to get in and out of with a crook leg! I had 1.2 tonne of dirt on it this week (loaded towards the front) and was unhappy with the tray builder when one wheel rubbed on one mudguard, bottom of ram hit pretty hard on diff (lucky no damage!) and I discovered tray builder had used one layer of insulation tape to try to mend the fuel tank breather pipe he'd broken. Fuel sitting on top of tank is not a good thing in bushfire season! Tray builder is 100km away so I put 40mm spacers to raise whole tray body higher off chassis. Will send him a dirty email... First service and oil change is at 15,000km - runs counter to my instincts. I like the fact that when in 4wd on a steep slope, the brake stays on for one or two secs after foot taken off brake - no need for handbrake starts. After 6,000km we're happy so far.

I must say it looks a bit second hand.
