Picked up a sealed Office Pro a couple of weeks ago for $100 delivered on ebay.
If you are running 98 at present a leap to 07 might be a bit much for the user and the hardware.
Office XP and Office 2003 are different, 2003 using a different file format as default, although backwards compatible to 98. But if the collaborator is on 03, and you don't want to end up with hardware upgrades etc, 03 would be the way to go.

*cough* your nearest torrent site is a good source for no-longer-available software *cough*
However, Microsoft would prefer that you upgraded to Vista.
Sometimes you can find old software in second-hand CD/Computer games stores or even at local computer fairs, but its pretty much a luck thing.
There's also Scribus - an open source desktop publishing program.
It's free, so you have nothing to loose especially if you can get your mate to upgrade to it too! Features colour management, PDF output, pre-flight checking and a range of other nice features typically found in $1000+ packages. Minimum 256 meg of memory and PIII 750mhz.

Can't you just ask your friend to save to publisher 98 format? It may limit the fancy options a bit, but should get you out of trouble

as with other Microsoft products it'll be File - Save As then select the file format and version you want to use.
your biggest issue will be compatibility between versions
page layouts put together using Publisher 2007 will possibly become corrupt when saved as Publisher 2003.
The real question is what are you sharing with your collaborator?
If it's text and pictures you are probably better off using Word and exchanging files as RTFs (Rich Text Format)
It's as close to bullet proof as Microsoft appears capable of
alternatively get a real page layout program
whilst a copy of Quark or Adobe will cost a fortune, you should be able to get something like Corel Ventura version 10 for not much dosh

Just checked my version of Publisher 2007 and it allows a save as to Publisher 98 and Publisher 2000. No mention of Published 2003 so you may be ok.
Do check the system requirements first before buying, alternatively download a trial from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/products/in...c-515a0d152415
Have fun
