Anyone got a 32 Bit Computer?
Mrs P. has about 6 CD's which have an auto run .exe file to extract the data and seeing they were made back in 2002 they won't open on a 64 bit system and the publisher is not interested in the problem. Has anyone got a 32 bit Windows computer that they can be opened on? I will pay in alcohol, beer or other stuff like money for your time.

+1 - Have many 32 bit virtual machines on servers that I could use to help Chris. I'm in Vic so someone else might be closer/quicker.
Either way, PM sent mate.

I am astounded at anyone having one let alone getting offers of help in a few minutes, thanks guys. Let's see if anyone closer to me has one first. I had not given a virtual machine any thought to tell the truth not that I know much about them.

I would have no idea on that, if so why would 10 refuse to run a .exe file? I get an error message saying that this version of windows cannot run the file. I also tried on a WIN7 computer with no success. I then did a search and found that the publisher had said it was written for a 32 bit OS and would not run on a 64 bit OS hence my question.

I don't have a 32bit Windows image set up but can get one reasonably quickly if you want. Chris, can you see if you can zip up a CD worth and put online (OneDrive or something like that?) for me to grab and test out? Not sure what internet speed you have to get it up online either - but if that's an issue, I'm just up at Bonnet Bay. I'll dig out some media to set up a VM

Win 64 should run 32 bit programs. Are you sure they aren’t 16 bit? If so you will need a 32 bit emulator on your 64 bit system.
If 32 bit and won’t run on 64 bit system, this may work - no guarantees ??. It turns on “run 32 bit programs” on a 64 bit system.
YouTube
It should work on a variety of Windows OS.

Chris,
If the exe file is just extracting compressed files off the CD why don't you get a program like WinRAR and use that to extract the files

I haven't looked at Lappa's YT link yes but here is the back story to the problem. These are CD's copyrighted in 2002 so the software is older than that and the data is a series of Embroidery files which can only be accessed via the .exe file. I had another CD which used the format, it took me through an installer and once it was installed on the computer in program files x86 I could access the files. This CD will not install so I did the search "why won't Cactus Punch CD install on my computer" and got these results
Cactus Punch Embroidery Designs CD/Disks
The first post in this link TheSewcial.com - Advanced Forum Detail Topic - Embroidery software and Windows 7
Since yesterday when I posted a new wrinkle has appeared. Years ago a CD was copied from the original and that CD I am told can be read on a WIN8 computer. I am yet to see it installed as I am too busy today to go and look at it and the person who has it is definitely not a computer nerd by any stretch of the imagination. I know nothing about WIN8 but the very little I have seen of it I can understand why it did not last long.CHRIS

i have a win7 PC ready for it if you need.
There's a huge backstory around 32-bit and 64-bit and why some apps don't work. It seems possible that this software might need a combination of things to address it (the installer doesn't work on x64 emulation, and maybe has version checks) - but either way I am happy to keep looking at it a bit deeper if you want. However it seems it might need a printer or something more permanently so you can continue to use it? Anyway, lets see what the next day/s bring. I'd still like a copy of the installer CD to test.

Another option is that it might possible to pickup an older PC for a few dollars from Gumtree or even side of the road that will suit your needs. At the last council electronics cleanup there was a container full that have no monetary value any more.

It is likely that the program did run but terminated itself after it found out from interrogating the os version number that it was not as it expected. Running 7zip would be a good option to bypass the need to use the exe file at all.

All I want to do is extract the embroidery files from the disc at the end of the day. I am flat out for the next few days with family and business matters so I will get back to it early next week as I can't make hard arrangements. Poundy is local to me so I guess it is logical to give him the discs to wave his magic wand over. Thanks to everyone who has chipped in to help, it is much appreciated.
