Afterlife for website?
I'm not getting any younger and I'm starting to think I would like my website to remain available once I drop off the perch. Currently my credit card is billed automatically until it expires to keep the site online but that will only keep it going a couple of years. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to keep it going once I'm fertilizing a tree somewhere??

Realistically, I think you'll need to find someone to maintain it in some form.
Are you using a content management system? Such as WordPress?
You will want to consider converting to static html so as to not have to worry about server updates breaking your website in the future.
I had some old websites that I let die because it was all too hard to update the CMS and a server update (important for security) broke the site as old CMS version was not compatible. Static html is not subject to the same issues.

Vern,
I guess you are aware of the WaybackMachine internet archive - Wayback Machine (archive.org)
Pretty handy at times.
Oh, and thank you for the TTIT resource, it's a very handy site full of practical information. Very much appreciated by me.Mobyturns

I think you can submit a url to the way back machine to force it to crawl and cache your site, otherwise it can be patchy.
I've seen sites archived by for example a club or state organisation for the subject.
There are (were?) some free webhosts, they add advertising to the site to cover costs.

It should stand OK on it's own - no connections to anything external or advertising, just HTML and stylesheets.
Had never heard of the Wayback machine! Had no idea it has been snapshotting my site since 2009 (For someone who spent the last 20 years working in IT, I really didn't take much interest in what was 'on the net') I imagine things like the Feedback form would not work in it but that won't matter once I kark it anyway. Might be easiest to just let that become my 'afterlife' - none of my offspring are interested enough to keep it going, especially if it is going to cost them anything.

Vern, have a look at Donald Simpson's "Some Magnetic Island Plants" - Some Magnetic Island Plants - Home
He passed in May 2020 and his family have undertaken to keep his legacy available with his nephew Neil doing the webmaster bit. Perhaps contact Neil to find out how they decided to proceed.
Donald's site is a very valuable "lay person" resource, as is yours, and appreciated by many.Mobyturns
