    Default Amd

I'm thinking of buying a new puter that has an AMD5200 dual core processor. Was wondering if anyone had one of these (or similar AMD) and what their experiences have been. I use an intel core duo for work and it hums along very nicely but I cant get a puter for $600 with an Intel processor.
(for 600 I get the box, mboard, 2Gb ram, 320Gb HDD, 512M video card, the processor and dual layer dvd burner.)

Meh. I always buy amd in preference to intel just to stick it to the evil empire, but the jesture is ultimately pointless because intel owns a slab of amd anyway.

AMD were demonstrably superior a few years back but intel have once again snatched the upper hand. In a practical sense you won't notice any difference, especially with a low end machine.

AMD have always been cheaper, your paying for a bigger advertising budget with intel.

it'll sheet all over my p4 2Ghz machine though. I like the disk shop in Brisbane (that's where it's from). It was here and in Townsville for a while but they closed down and just have a distributor, I think.

There have traditionally been 4 shops in Brisbane that are demonstrably cheaper than the others. Computer alliance at Mt Gravatt have an online configurator, or did last time I looked. The others I forget. Anyway this 4 are within about $10 of the cheapest prices you'll get but have been around a long time so if anything breaks there is someone to take it to. 2c.

Check out umart online. They have three shops in Brisbane, one on the Sunshine Coast and one on the Gold Coast. Very competitve pricing.
