Default ASUS laptop keyboard locked on numbers

Looking for advice on how to rectify keyboard. Do not have manual on this computer.
Has been working OK but a few days ago started to print numbers in place of letters. Keyboard can be configured to turn part of it into a numeric pad but I do not know how to do this OR have I tried. I have had various advice on pressing fn key plus number lock key but nothing changes. I feel it must be a simple fix although it's over my head. This message has beeb inputed via a usb keyboard. Hope someone can assist.
Could it be the sequence in which keys are pressed - in unison or one after the other?
    Thankyou - Ned Black

Ned, there should be a "fn" key in the lower left of the keyboard and a "num lk" (number lock, usually also on the scroll lock) key in the upper or top right.

Press them both together "fn" key first by a smidge, it should fix it.

The 'fn' key is the 'function key that enables a second action for some keys.

    Hi,

Not sure why yours stays on, could be a bung keyboard key.

The letters to numbers swap you have are exactly the same as the secondary Scroll Lk (same as the num lk key) function on the keys on my dell laptop.

This is engaged by pressing Fn and Num Lk and then holding on Fn whilst tapping u,i,o,p,j,k,l, etc to get numbers and disengaged by releasing Fn key.

Eventually all keyboards will wear out especially the keys that you use often like e,a,i, that makes for nt r st ng r d ng

Ned, if you have a USB keyboard attached, press the num lk key on that one.

Well done Groggy!! It worked I pressed the number lock on the usb keyboard and i am typing this on the laptop keyboard. Thankyou for the help. I was just about to bin this bloody machine. I had spent a reasonable amount of money and time resurrecting this handme down - fitting new memory, battery, hard drive - only to think the keyboard was stuffed. I don't have the manual and this problem seemed like the last straw.
Thank you so much for the help.
