    Default AVG 2011 problems

After Malb fixed my internet problems, I decided to download AVG 2011 free.

    Well.....let......me....tell...you....everything..... slowed.... down... to... a....crawl.

My newly acquired laptop just zinged along prior to the download. Now it's hobbled like my desk top PC. I reckon I have found the culprit.

Do you reckon I can uninstall AVG, no way, not without a fight. Can't seem to do it via Install/uninstall programs, and even the AVG uninstall program is being stubborn.

How can I install AVG of a few years ago, when it was simple, but did the job?

It's called creeping featuritis, and it's usually caused by marketing managers demanding more features in a product to keep up with the competition or to boost sales of their product.

The average marketing manager refuses to accept the 'leave it as it is, just optimise the code and fix bugs' mantra, as this provides no opportunity to show how 'good'* they are and why they should get that 20% performance bonus this year.

So resources get put onto adding bits, and there's never adequate time to tidy up or document legacy code, and things are rushed so that it's out in time to be counted in this quarter's performance assessment....and the code base gradually becomes a festering stack of quick fixes and little tacked on bits that just don't work as well as they should.

Personally, I've had no problems with the free Microsoft Security Essentials over the last year or so. Seems to do its job.

Now I've really done it. My laptop is still running slow, despite uninstalling AVG 2011 free. I also did a restore back a couple of days.

My internet login problem has returned, and I can't fix it despite being shown by Malb what to fix.

    I give up.

Well it seems that restoring the computer didn't do the job so maybe you would be better off "undoing" the last restore and go back to where you were. I also use Windows essentials now for my anti virus software and find it does what I want it to do. You seem to be having a bad run with your computers.

You can download an earlier version of AVG from this website but don't know if that will address this situation with any success. Worth a try I guess cos it may uninstall the newer version that you have installed to allow the older version to install.

Ken go here and download Revo Uninstaller and use the 'Force Uninstall' function to remove all traces of AVG...I had the same problem and you will be absolutely amazed at what has been left behind. this is a free trial but I use the paid for version all the time...well worth owning.

Undid the last restore, and regained access to emails. Have downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials, and it's currently doing a scan, looks like it's going to take at least half an hour.

Thanks fellas for the links, reckon I'll download the old version of AVG, and install it on my main desk top. What concerns me is that once downloaded, it will want to upgrade itself, swelling into a monster again.

    So far, all's good.

The problem with old versions is that they won't be getting the latest definitions.

MSE works as a full anti-virus solution and seems to do it pretty well, and I visit/download from sites that by all rights should be swarming with virii.

I check the computer to see what processes are running occasionally with Process Explorer, just to make sure there's nothing there that I can't recognise.

The nastiest problem I have had was accidentally clicking on the "Yes, I'd like to install the ASK.com toolbar" checkbox in an installer.

    Other security precautions include:
Null-routing a stack of advertising and malicious domains.
Firefox with NoScript and Flashblock and AdBlock Plus.
(Basically, nothing runs without my express permission, even if this does mean giving temporary permission to half a dozen sites to view a video)

When I uninstall a program I then do a manual search for the left overs and there are alway plenty of those. Go to My Computer and search for AVG and watch all the files that appear. You will never get them all as they infect the registry and that requires a brave person to delete those files.

I gave up on AVG about two years ago for the same reason, tried another one recommended from here and didn't like that any better so I haven't used one for about 12 months, guess what, no virii in that time so I won't bother any longer. If you go to the same sites as a rule and don't open emails you know nothing about especially if they have attachments it is a reasonable risk, at least for me, I am sure others will disagree and for good reasons and their advice should also be considered.

My wife recently had a virus invade her computer and she was using AVG and it did nothing. I backed up her email, My Docs gave it a format and back to square one.

Chris, I don't think many on here will agree to not having some sort of protection on your computer. Not only a risk to your own computer but can be a risk to others when you send emails. but to each their own.

    Hi , Neksmerj .
You could try this one Antivirus program it free and very good its called avast . It is always scanning . I use to have AVG and my son took it off because AVG wasn't working real good .Where avast picks up the viruses straight away and stops in its tracks . The last weeks I'm been getting few viruses searching woodwork site so you really have some protection .

For a start I do not get involved in sending emails to anyone with attachments, never open emails with attachments and stay away from the trend of getting involved in email groups who pass them from one to the other. Passing emails around from one person to the other has to be the easiest way to pick up a virus that I know of.

I have been on the net since the very early days and have never had a virus on my own computer and while I was using a checker not one alert, I am talking back to the mid nineties but then they weren't around then so the first five years or so can be ignored. Unfortunately I am going to be forced to use one as I am developing an on line business and for sure I am going to have to receive and open attachments from unknown machines.

Another way to minimise the risk is not using any MS product on line. I don't even instal MS's excuse for an email client as it is just inviting trouble. There are plenty of safer alternatives out there that can be had for free.

I don't want anyone to follow what I do, it is my choice and up until now has worked for me. The totally risk free alternative is to use a Mac, something I might give some thought to instead of using a virus checker that slows everything down and from my experience does not always work. I think anyone who has tested them will say that one does not stop all and you have to take that risk.

The more I think about the Mac for business the more it appeals, I don't want to have a virus hit my business computer than have to try and save everything before formatting the drives. If a virus got into through the checker then getting rid of it is going to involve a format to be safe as the bloody checker did not even stop it so it can't be expected to fix the problem.

All the above is just an explanation of my experience and is not meant to discourage anyone from using a virus checker or disagree with anyone else's view on this problem.
